MHussey is the only person who I can think of who had reasonable success at 6 in semi-recent years. Unsurprising as he's pretty much the prototypical specialist 6.

i mean symonds made two really good tons and averaged 40 but did he really have that great of a time at 6 either?

well now we're getting into weird territory because other than sobers not many batsman stayed at 6 and averaged much above 40

Number 6 being such a problem spot is recent tbh. It used to be 4 where we could never find anyone to score runs from.

Yeah but that was a different problem -- the best batsmen in the team seemed to randomly fall off a cliff when batting in that position. This more recent problem is just the inability to find six good batsmen to fill all the slots - I'm sure Smith, Handscomb etc could score runs at six if they were picked there - particularly given they'd like one of them to bowl seam-up.

Averaged in the 30s at 6 so not really. Batsmen with good records at 6 since 2005 for Australia are Hussey, Gilchrist and Clarke... but nobody really recent. Best recent one is Voges who averaged 40 at 6.

North, Symonds, Watson, Smith and M. Marsh all played a fair amount at that position and their records are all crap. Pretty bizarre.

edit: Back before 2005 it was a good position for Ponting, Steve Waugh and plenty of other people.

MHussey was the prototypical specialist everything

He could have batted anywhere and been just as successful IMO. Wasn't he always an opener until they forced him to no. 6 just to get him in a team already boasting Hayden and Langer?

I thought it was the other way around? He originally got picked because there was a spot opening and they decided to shove him in, then Clarke (I think) got dropped and they shifted him back down.

yeah i didnt rate symonds as much as most either

however there's hardly been any number 6 in history who was a gun bat and didnt get promoted up the order. Sobers the only one I can think of who mainly stayed at 6

He was an opener in first class cricket, but this is right. That was really the thing which kept him out of the test team for so long, Australia had a string of successful openers with Slater, Hayden, Langer etc, and Hussey never really dominated in the shield like he did in county cricket. Was picked after the 2005 Ashes loss for the opening spot and moved down when there was a middle order spot because he did well opening. Was definitely thought of as an opening option at the time though as far as I remember.

Border and Waugh both batted at 6 a lot and averaged over 50 there, though they did play more at 5 overall.
