30 Test hundreds

Ponting hit tons against Wasim/Waqar/prime Shoaib, Donald/Pollock, Ambrose/Walsh and Murali.

Not his fault most of those quicks starting retiring when he was still in his mid 20s. Still proved himself against them as a young man when he had the chance

Not to mention inaccurate. Ponting did perfectly fine when facing Steyn. His 100 and 99 vs SA in 2008 came in the same match Steyn took 10 to win the series...great knocks. No way he averages 20s vs him.
I assume he means vs Steyn individually, but those stats have always been mostly useless.

I know I will look like a prick for this but I don't think Phil Hughes would have got near 30 tons. He was 26 and would have needed 27 more. Fine player but was dicked about by selectors, and also didn't kick on much once he got in after his first series.

Had some clear technical issues too, especially against spin. Had the talent to be a good test quality batsman for sure but too flawed to get 30 tons imo.

Apologies in advance if I come across as insensitive, but obviously he had technical deficiencies against more than just spin. I can recall him getting out against the short stuff numerous times - gloved down leg or caught short-leg - against the quick men.

Devastating player when on song though.

A batsman averaging 20 against a bowler is bloody impressive actually.
Yeah, you have to play a big old innings to get 60 balls from one bowler in most cases. Especially a number 3 who isn't likely going to face the first few overs of Steyn. So scoring 20 against one bowler in a career you are likely going pretty well overall.

You are not playing only one bowler in a match though. 4 or 5 bowlers at least in which case you'll be averaging 80 or 100 per innings if you average 20 per bowler.

I vaguely remember Smith dropping Ponting on nought off Steyn. Kallis dropped him off Steyn on nought too. Cant remember which test.

What? 5 Bowlers - 100 runs - 5 dismissals.
If you had the same average against all Bowlers, that will also be your overall average.

Who said he averages 20 against all bowlers? If you average 20 against one of the best bowlers going around and then plunder his teammates you are still contributing very handily to the team.

This statement very genuinely doesn't seem to be anywhere close to what you said. It has nothing about the quality of the bowler.
