I meant more so with how young he's started and potential for longevity, rather than any similarity with their batting styles.

Right. Like I said, I'm still not confident that he'll score runs against India (or, indeed, against Broad and Anderson next summer when they inevitably go around the wicket to him straight away), but the kid knows how to score runs, which is what matters at this age.

It was always stupid to have a go at his scoring rate earlier. Batsman in going slowly at the beginning of his innings shocker.

He's paced it beautifully and probably striking at about 55 at this stage, which is perfectly acceptable. It's basically what Pujara does every time he makes a big score.

Indeed. At this young an age, even a century coming in at 300-2 against Zimbabwe is worthy of a little bit of praise.

Being able to construct an innings, ignore plays and misses, score within your zones is as much a "talent" as aesthetic strokemaking.

It's why Nic Maddinson, for example, is not a Test standard batsman despite having all the shots in the book and then some.

Everyone always thinks something along these lines. And not just in regards to cricket. It's the classic, "things were better in my day".

I'm not sure about this. 10 years ago was the early-mid 2000s when people were constantly crying about the lack of quality pace attacks and prevalence of flatter pitches. As time has gone on, people seem to have conveniently forgotten that those years had tons of batsmen filling their boots against mediocre bowlers. It's really weird how the narrative of the 2000s has changed.

It happens. I remember Sachin and Dravid getting a few cheap centuries batting alongside Sehwag, who was taking away all the attention at the other end by blazing to a 200 within 2 sessions or so. Makes it much easier for the other guy to settle in. Add in an already demoralized Pak attack and the dead rubber effect.
