Yeh if you were ever gonna make someone follow on it would have been in this test, surely.
I am in the "almost never enforce a follow on" camp

But this time with the bowlers each having bowled so few overs yesterday, a night's rest and a few overs to get the last couple of wickets, and about 300 in front.

I would have thought about making them follow on

Warners test form is slowly but surely dropping. Is averaging something like@37 the last calandar year.
I thought Warner has played the total team mans game here, in the first innings he curbed his aggression and ground down the bowlers giving the team a good platform to work from. In the second innings it made no difference if he made 10 or a 100 as the only thing needed was quick runs and he went out to set up the innings with that in mind and not his personal average. Played for the team.

Was he playing for the team first innings in Hobart, then?

Can so tell when a bloke is struggling massively. Their trigger movements get exaggerated to the point where they commit too soon. Really want Younis to do well. He's one of the good guys.

Bowlers and fielders getting the blame for not being able to defend 490 - valid.
Captain getting the blame for declaring with > 2 days remaining - also valid.

If the storm was a concern, they should have enforced a follow on without question. Can't have it all.
I don't know if anyone is saying it apart from me, but to my mind if you decide to give a side a sniff with so long to go in the first test of a three match series and you lose, then questions have to be asked.
Why are people saying Smith will be sacked for this declaration if Aust lose?

We've set them almost 500. If we lose from here, it's nothing to do with Smith's declaration. Well it is, but it isn't really, if you know what I mean!
Yeh look fair enough. But we shouldn't lose, and if we do, the blame has to go to the bowlers not making chances and probably dropped catches as well. If it's gonna storm tomorrow as suggested, we had to declare now in such a strong position imo.

On another note, I'm really enjoying Waqar's commentary.
This has to be the most pointless conversation ever on CW.

Guys, teams don't chase 490, especially not the team that has folded for 142 the day before.

Yeah, Hazlewood owning him here.

If we're going to run ourselves in circles making excuses for Warner, then we shouldn't restrict it to when the team is doing well.
I have no idea what you are going on about, perhaps you have mixed me up with another poster or something.

It's been spoken of a lot here before, but TPC's captaincy of Lyon is bizarre. He's just got a pole and is looking dangerous, but as Clarke was saying before, he's got no point in when all the turn is fifth stump line. Then he bowls a maiden next up and gets taken off for bird who's now gone for 12 off the over. Smh.

I do wonder if Clarke gets frustrated watching it. He surely must know exactly what he himself would be doing differently wrt Lyon whilst commentating.

He probably doesn't want to be too vocal about it butyou would think he and/ or Warne would have a chat with Snith about it.

Actually, you would think Lyon would too,but he seems happier having a laugh with Ian Gould most overs.

To be fair, Lyon bowled too straight even under Clarke, who seemed to be frustrated by it back then. That's how the around the wicket stuff started, I think.

Clarke rightly citing how much he disliked batting out the last few balls before a break.

Would so love a Younis special here. Come on, old man, get a 200!
Not if Hazlewood has a say about it. Bowled three of the best overs the Pak master batsman has ever faced. What an 11 over spell by Hazey. A piddling 5 runs taken off him.. with 8 pressure building maidens.

Clearly, there are no sides in World Cricket that are dominant. What I mean by dominant is that the team can successfully play both home and away. Seems everyone at the moment are great at home, but flops away. I remember that great Aussie team that ruled World Cricket for a decade home and away: I wish we could see something like that again.
