***Official*** Australia vs New Zealand ODIs 2016/17

Just on the whole "JAMODI" series stuff that came up earlier in the thread, think its beginning to get overplayed on here. Why would NZ fans not care about this series? They should demand better from their team. Yes they're coming off a good series win vs. Pakistan but 3 pretty bad losses (first wasn't too bad but gave up a good position).

Its healthy that NZ fans are analysing and caring about these losses. This wasn't the same as a tri-series right before the World Cup thing where you can put it as a warm-up etc. It was a proper cricket series where their players were representing their country against the world champs.

Even Smith and Williamson said that more context would be nice.. But yeah, nothing wrong with being worried that the ODI side is not shaping up well..

Hopefully they can introduce some kind of ODI league championship where every series counts. And where there's a fixed number of home & away series for all teams.

Fair enough Smith is ****** that he had to cop three ODIs in between two test series, and I won't defend the scheduling, but what else can they do for context? The Chappell Hadlee trophy was on the line in a three match ODI series. Can't really do much else to give it context can they?

They were endorsing what centurymaker posted above.. Yeah not blaming the administrators. Couldn't have done much more for this series.

ODIs are clearly dying anyway. T20s have cannibalized the shorter format. I think I read a piece a few days ago which showed how ODI attendances in Australia have dropped very sharply recently. On the other hand, day night tests have received great attendances and TV ratings.

Really hope atleast one day night test per series becomes the norm soon. It's a proven concept now and all those concerns about the pink ball's visibility have seemingly been overblown. I don't know why other boards have been slow to the game, you'd have thought the BCCI would love hosting day nighters... the potential for revenue is huge.

Day night Tests would have better attendance if it was played through the working week, right? On weekends, I would prefer to go to watch during the daytime.

No way. They'd get much better attendance by being on the weekends.

I think his point is though you'd play day nights on workdays and normal tests primarily on weekends. Day nights will get better attendance whether on a weekday or weekend, but if you are going to have a day nighter you'd do it moreso on weekdays so people can go after work.

Yeah, but I would prefer to go to a match during the day time on weekends. Evenings you can do other things (go out, meet friends etc.). Now that doesn't apply to me, because I don't have much of a life, but I'd think most people would prefer it that way.

I'm thinking Starc and Cummins will run through us, we also haven't played any recent ODI series either which is going to dust us up a bit.

I'd suggest we look to chase as much as possible and stack the batting.
My first post.
Gotta say I was surprised the Kiwis did not give us a better fight.

To be fair, most Kiwis expected the 3-0 result from what I recall (might need to check the early thread comments again).

NZ's ODI outfit seems completely different mentally with McCullum retiring. Our fielding standards have dropped badly, suddenly bowling no balls & wides like never before & overall they just look much more defensive, especially in the field. Best examples, not referring such a crucial LBW as Smith early on in Sydney, and no 3rd slip to Warner in Boult's very first over to him at Melbourne. I know it was in Australian conditions, but just looked such a different side than beat Australia 2-1 just 10 months ago in NZ. Chalk and cheese.

McCullum's retirement has left an enormous hole in the side for reasons so much bigger than just his batting. The suicidal way he used to lead by example in the field for one, meant nobody else would dare give anything less than 100% when he was chief.

Not suggesting there isn't a good respect for KW in the squad, but the difference of intensity is clear for anything to see.

I figured, but it doesn't really make any sense when you can just play every test over a weekeend

I also think Dan Vettori hanging up his ball also has hit the side hard. He was such a great competitor. Wish we could have poached Dan after Warne retired..I would like to see Dan take our own Ashton Agar under his wing. The young Aussie left armer already resembles the great man's action... I am hoping one day he can also resemble his record.

The Melbourne ODI was better attended than quite a few of the corresponding pre-Xmas ODIs of recent times.
Yes, WI 09/10 (post-Xmas), SL 10/11, SA 14/15 all had lower crowds at the MCG than this one. Apart from ODIs involving England or India, it's a surprise to get a ODI with a 25k crowd at the MCG now.

Was surprised that the Oz v WI 5th ODI at the MCG in 12/13 (when Oz were up 4-0) actually got 21k - thought that would've struggled to get 15k in context of other recent MCG crowds.

So this series, squeezed in tightly like a budget airline passenger between unfortunate neighbours, is attracting a lot of commentary given it starts Monday. :/

NZ are apparently giving the gloves to Latham instead of debuting Blundell. Not sure I'm thrilled at that prospect - would prefer Latham focused on batting and while this may afford the XI additional balance with the extra bowling option, that's not much good if the extra spot is used to pick someone mediocre like CDG, whose worst format is probably 50-over matches imo.

Feel for Blundell, but if that's the case then I guess the XI would be

Guptill, Latham, KW, Taylor, Broom, Neesham, Munro, Santner, Southee, Boult, Henry

Get that it's Eden Park, but still wish we had the option to pick Sodhi. As it is, I'm sorely tempted to leave out Munro and pick 4 specialist quicks - but I tend to think that Ferguson will get bazookered.

Jeez mate, that was basically 5 years ago, with the exception of his WC comeback, but yes he's been a massive loss.
