They try and skirt licensing and employment laws in some of the countries they're in. Consumers don't really care so much because they get cheaper rides.

Rickshaw and taxi drivers are basically thugs in many parts of India. Anything that allows me to not pay them a rupee is a good thing.

The real thugs are the licencing authorities and the rules. Shambolic. The drivers themselves are left with little choice. Ola and Uber are lifesavers.

Is there any room on road there anyway? I've seen slumdog millionaire mate, and it looks ****ing crowded. Wouldn't it be faster to just walk?

Please. 80% of the autos you see on the street either refuse to go where you want or charge absurdly random amounts if they see you're desperate for a ride. **** em.

Mumbai autos are fair, at least in that they use the ****ing meter,so I have some sympathy with them.

How does Uberpool work exactly? Haven't tried it yet..
It matches up with requests from people along your route and heading in the same direction, and you share the uber with them. Sometimes you get lucky and there's no one else inside but other times you might have be with another passenger whose pickup/dropoff point results in a bit of a detour. It's cheaper than a regular uber of course.

The constant references makes me wonder if you have ever actually seen the movie.

Agree. Have tried taking those yellow ambassadors in the city. The rate of refusal and random charging of fares is dire.

Bangalore auto drivers use the meter for most parts too. Or they say something like give me 20 more than the meter. Hyderabad drivers are pure scum much in the same way Chennai drivers are.

One adverse effect of uber making life better has been the rickshaw wallahs abandoning cng and going back to kerosene here in Ahmedabad. Has resulted in terrible air quality.
