To anyone more knowledgeable than me , what is Makhanya's role in the Dolphins set up? I'm from Durban and I follow the team closely but it does baffle me how he gets picked without ever doing much.
He is a batsman who bowls little 115kmph-120kmph seamers. Its just the reality of the selection criteria that he is playing. He is still 20 but playing above his level at this moment.

There are a couple of guys like that.

Daniel Sincuba batted number six for the Titans, didn't bowl, and scored 32 runs in the match.

His FC average after 36 games is 22.

He probably isn't good enough for the provincial three-day stuff, never mind franchise cricket.

Still think we need to expand the franchise system and include 2 more teams.... and give them financial support we don't need another Knights scenario; whereby there where good players sitting out at the Titans and Cobras while Knights struggled for awhile to get some class players. If it was not for the problems at the Cobras they still may not have gotten the players they have... similar for the Warriors.

Agreed.

Will also give more opportunities for white guys who have to sit out, and for POCs.

Question is where would you put the franchises?

Potch must be one, and East London would probably get the other?

As a Benonian it would be nice to see Easterns get a franchise again, but I don't see it happening.

Warriors getting a win, nice for my home team. Cobras look woeful for such a talented side, can see their is obvious problems in the camp. Nice to see Hamza at last get some runs. Smith having a great cameo innings as well. Special mention for Seconds, keeps scoring runs and doing well; still young; potential future reserve SA keeper if he keeps going?

Not sure how it benefits anyone involved or young black cricketers that this happens.

And then you've got guys like Markram (first bat for Northerns on the go), Conway (129) & Savage (only 5-for in first round of 3-day Sunfoil Cup) playing provincial cricket. It's like driving them away from SA cricket.

Even McGillivray and Dudgeon for Gauteng.

Its's good to see the young batsman stepping it up. Guys like Ackermann, Moore, Smith, Hamza , De Bruyn but what about the SA 'A' players like van Zyl, Ramela, Kuhn, Q. Adams. They've haven't been saying I want to get into the Proteas team have they.

Second is a good player but probably not suited to the role we want from a keeper who can bring energy and quick scoring when he comes to the wicket. At the moment Heinrich Klaasen has to be the guy making selectors sit up.

This is my issue with these quotas , from a sporting perspective they force teams into some questionable selections at times. Being a Dolphins fan I'd have Savage in the team at 7 over Makhanya any day. But it's the lay of the land unfortunately.

Just signed a two year deal with Leicestershire.

Lungi Ngidi on franchise FC debut for the Titans. Only had 1 FC wicket in first 3 games but took 9 wickets last week and has taken four so far here. Saw a bit of him a few years back and he seemed alright. Not sure if he has grown anymore but he looked fairly solid.

Cobras have started poorly again as well. Players may not be happy with the coach but looks like they are just phoning it in.

Looking at the scores today I saw Kagiso Rapulana batting 5 for the Lions. After 55 FC games his average is barely 23. How is he good enough to be batting at no 6 for a franchise side?

What kind of deal is Ackermann going on? Kolpak?

Ngidi certainly has the tools and to me the best young strike-bowler in SA with Olivier and Dupavillon. Glad to see him get this opportunity because was getting a bit worried with his only performances coming in T20. His action does tend to angle into right-handers and cramp them.

Not sure how it works but think he has a Dutch passport. Really disappointing considering he seems to be maturing into the batsman many thought he would be at a young age or maybe he needed opportunities at the Warriors earlier to grow into his role but didn't get it for whatever reason. Forgot to mention - Pierre De Bruyn is at the Foxes now isn't he ?

Really glad to see Mulder get into the runs now as well. Now it is Markram's turn on Sunfoil Series debut for the Titans.
Moore cracking his 4th half century this season ? Just needs to convert them now.
I know the Dolphins have started well but that team really is filled with some hacks so really pleased to see Savage performing again with KZN - hopefully he gets a 100 now to back up the wickets he has taken and Dupavillon gets fit soon.

I always like to keep an eye out for young players in the Provincial set-up

Boland are playing their first 4-day games of the season and obviously they have Keegan Petersen, Justin Ontong and Lizaad Williams contracted to the Cobras while Simon Khomari and Ferisco Adams has played for the Cobras but it's good to see two Stellenbosch University students in Kyle Simmonds and Brandon Glover in the team. Simmonds will push Piedt and Linde and is a genuine all-rounder. A very tall sla (similar sort to former Protea and EP Stalwart Tim Shaw). While Glover is a tall-fast bowler I picked up whilst at school so it's good to see he has got this opportunity and clearly Johann Louw saw the potential I saw.

A couple weeks back Free State played. The usual players like Andries Gous, Leus Du Plooy, Patrick Botha etc but like Mulder schoolboy Raynard van Tonder scored runs in both the 4-day game and 1-day game which is good to see. Lwandiswa Zuma also back from injury. Just need to get multiple FS Youth cricketer of the year in Sean Whitehead around guys like Robbie P.

There is more than that of course. Lots of new young names around for WP , EP, Natal Coastal & Inland, Gauteng, Northerns & North West etc

Dwaine Pretorius also got 87, and Mulder is on 75* at the moment.

Re: Ackermann, I wonder how Brexit will affect guys like him with EU passports? Will also affect a couple of Aussies and Kiwis too possibly.

Well, with the situation at the varsities now at least class and exams won't get in the way of cricket.

I think Roelof got his Somerset deal like that as well. Certainly is interesting but then again if you look at recent football transfers the new Brexit rules seem to have not effected that yet. I think it's going to be quite a process for it to come into full action.

:D Looks like cricket will be their only pass or failure mark this year !

Mulder needs 12 more runs for his first franchise hundred at 18 but only one wicket left. Freak of a talent.
