**Official** England in Bangladesh 2016

Bairstow has been far, far more than ok. He's been superb
He has been way too scrappy. A middleweight order batsman needs to be assured of his presence. Johnny isn't that. Maybe it's because he has just played against Pakistan at a time when England lost early wickets. We will see.

yep I don't think either Bairstow or Ali are in any danger of losing their spots, even if they have a bad tour here
I don't think England need 2 spinners with one is only picking up a wicket a match and scoring the odd 10-20 runs. Ali is good enough to be a middle order batsman but that's not the route they are going so I don't see why needs to play here.

I mean I d certainly pick him but Bangladesh could easily be an opportunity for young players

I don't even really understand what you are saying there.....middleweight batsmen.....assured of his presence??

But It's a load of crap anyway.........the bloke has scored just shy of 1000 runs this year at 76.31. How the **** can that be considered "scrappy"??

He still has the second highest average for a wicketkeeper in Tests ever, minimum 20 innings. Think he is safe for a few more series.

I don't think Moeen is as safe as some of you blokes do. He was being picked primarily as a bowler and his bowling really hasn't as developed how I'd have hoped, and while he's scored lots of runs batting 7/8 he's going to need to score some batting a bit higher if he wants to keep a spot based on that. If he gets outbowled by the other spinners playing and outbatted by Duckett, Hameed, Ballance etc then I can see him getting left out.

I think he'll contribute in some way and keep his spot ftr, but if he's not doing much I can definitely see him squeezed out.

England selectors tend to love players who score a few runs down the order and bowl a bit (but not very well) though. Collingwood and Solanki pretty much stayed in the side for years doing just that, especially the former.

My preferred XI for England would be:

1. Cook c
2. Duckett (it's a left/left combo but Hameed probably needs a bit more time and Bairstow one last chance)
3. Root
4. Bairstow (I know statistically he's done ok but too many of his runs h ave been scrappy, he needs to show reassurance)
5. Buttler wk (a better keeper than Bairstow)
6. Stokes
7. Ali
8. Woakes
9. Rashid
10. Broad
11. Ball

Ballance could have been in but I always prefer the option of an extra bowler, especially considering England have genuine batsmen as low as 9. Lots of options in this team.

Bairstow and Ali have been iffy and scrappy, fighting for their position. With regards to Ali, he has looked ineffective here, with Rashid doing a miles better job. WHo knows, even Ansari might get a shout.

Tbh, no disrespect to Bangladesh but if England play to their best ability, they could try out a couple more youngsters and still win.
Are you English? As I have no idea what you've been watching.

Bairstow has just had a world class year with the bat in test cricket, made himself undroppable and our third best bat. Moeen batting has got back to it's best, his bowling not so much and can see us playing 3 spinners to compensate for that.Buttler isn't a test cricketer while I've got a hole in my head. He has had 1 first class innings in a year and his keeping is worse than bairstow stood upto the stumps. Although he is a better all round keeper though. His white ball performances don't make him worthy of a recall.

Ballance shouldn't have even been recalled in the summer, but he will do well in the sub continent.

Anyway sounds like Duckett to open and Ballance at 4. 5-7 is a lottery with Ben,Jonny and Moeen. Depends on work load.

I think the only question mark is between Ansari/Batty/Ball/Finn. Depending on 3 spinners/4 seamers. I reckon it will be Batty.

Eh, not really great examples IMO. I'm talking about the Test side here -- Solanki played no Tests and Collingwood averaged low 40s batting almost exclusively in the top six. If Moeen can average low 40s batting in the top six then that'll be enough to hold his place fine as it stands, even without his bowling.

I think he'll hold his place, but I'm not ruling out him getting dumped if he has a rough time of it. I'm expecting him to be moved up the order a bit with more batting responsibility and less bowling based on what he did last summer, but if doesn't score runs in that role and the spinners brought in outbowl him, he'll be in a tough spot selection wise.

Ashley Giles probably better example, although he was better bowler and far worse bat than Moeen. He stayed in the team ahead of better outright bowlers because Duncan Fletcher loved '3D' cricketers.

Yeah, we are now at the stage where he has to justify his place as a batsman and I think he has a decent chance of making it as a decent number 6, you have got to say it is more likely than him ever being a consistently good bowler. Problem is that the weaknesses of others means he might still be asked to do the job that he is less well equipped for, it might actually help him long term if someone else can secure a spot as lead spinner.
