The thread maybe, but Furballs comment was in response to Viriya who was specifically talking about tests. And he's quite right, anyone picking ABDV or Sanga over Gilly as their keeper in tests is just way off base.

How many other openers of Gilchrist's calibre have there actually been though? Gilchrist's role was to put Australia firmly on the front foot and nobody in the history of the game has scored as many runs as Gilchrist as quickly as Gilchrist.

Tendulkar aside, who's just a freak, nobody has done what Gilchrist has done as successfully as he did. Even someone like Jayasuriya, who's probably the closest comparison to Gilchrist, has a reasonably significantly inferior average and strike rate.

On pure numbers, Gilly equals Sewag, but you get a much better keeper than Dhoni. Remember - Gilly was a great keeper (except for the very end). Sanath is not as good as Sehwag.
When you discard Dhoni you can bring in Bevan. Sure Dhoni has an average like Bevan, but this is only for those who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge that batting has become markedly easier in ODI cricket since the 90's. Bevan would be averaging 60 odd nowadays and at a faster scoring rate, possibly even faster than Dhoni, when you factor in the recent acclerations in this area. He'd be scoring at least as quick as Dhoni, but making larger scores.

So take Gilly at the start - and get Bevan to finish. Dhoni isn't needed.

Or you can bring in Dhoni - get weaker keeping, lose Bevan and replace Gilly with....who? Who is as markedly better than Gilly as Bevo is to Dhoni?

When Gilly works, it is downhill sking for everyone after him. When Dhoni works, Bevan would have worked better.

MSD is a great keeper in ODIs too. It may not be obvious but he just is. His stumpings off spinners means having Sanath and MSD in the AT XI is an awesome option

Its a matter of opinion though. The openers post Gilly had it tougher in that era. You can possibly say both Gilly and MSD had the easier time at their respective positions through their careers. But MSD anyways only benefitted from the factors you mention for 3 or 4 years. Gilly's whole career had these factors.

Once again, I am not denying his greatness here. Just that MSD is a better keeper/batsman pick for ODIs, whatever be your consideration, whether it is a left handed attacking opener at the top or better quality keeper or clutch effectiveness.

Your posting is lamentable. If us pointing out that you were wrong (which I believe I did so as politely as possible considering the idiocy on display) is "ganging up" on you then I don't know what to say.

Your vacation sounds lovely. If it's as good as you make it seem then it's probably better if you enjoyed it us much as possible instead of willingly subjecting yourself to cyber bullying from people with clearly inferior lives to yours.

Lol.. the very point that this is insignificant is what is lost in all these "I am right and you are wrong, coz I got nothing better to do with my life" posts... Sure, I could have posted that "the only clutch games that matter" as I wanted to, but I just hate typing off the android keyboard and wrote something where the meaning was obvious even if the verbiage was not perfect. If that is your definition of politeness, it shows why CW hardly gets new members posting regularly like it used to. And I dont consider this cyber bullying. I have been in forums where it actually happens. Try as you guys may, you are not gonna bully me. I am too old for that **** now. I just consider it making my point over a sport I love, at a forum that I have the utmost respect for and have been a part of for more than 10 years. I have seen much better posters here leave coz of these exact type of posts.
