***Official*** New Zealand in India 2016

Well at least we go into day 4 with an outside chance at being competitive. Can't fault our bowlers too much

Yeah our bowling has been good. We just struggle getting rid of the tail. Frustrating af.

Not like we're going to win but if there's an outside chance we need to get the last two wickets for like 20 runs.

cricinfo already shilling Rohit's knock too, "Rohit begins to repay the faith . . . just like a broken clock that hits a luckswinging 80 at home after unlimited miserable failures"

So Rohit is going to go down as India's Guptill albeit with an ego & possibly an average to reflect he never had to face the brand new ball?

Have to give Rohit some slight credit TBF. Remove his runs and India would be in a whole mess of trouble.

Also is anywhere else moderately concerned about Latham? Has looked a bit average this year. Just had a look and against teams that aren't Zimbabwe for 2016

194 @ 17.64
2 50s
1 10-50 score
7 scores under 10

We've had a pretty difficult time against Australia and South Africa but really expect more from Latham.

Hell even Guptill who is having his second worst year in a career of bad years against the top teams has gone past 10 5 times for his 130 @ 13

Latham's dismissals have been worrying me more than just merely his poor numbers. This last dismissal was a big concern, It was a regulation ball swinging from off-to leg, it wasn't like it was late reverse swing. A test standard opener should be able to cover those.

It's certainly troubling, especially some of his dismissals, but he did get a 50 last match in a superb partnership with KW. He's got 3 more innings in India and a plethora of home games to come right before I'd start getting worried.

I said moderately concerned, not worried.

I've been worried about him for 12 months or more. For the amount of ability and technical proficiency he looks like he has, his record is heading towards 'no better than any other NZ opener we've tried' territory. We desperately need him to start scoring runs for us to beat good sides.

Nah he's put in a lot more decent performances than the NBTAOOs of recent times. The three 50s in the Windies, twin UAE centuries, and 80 odd when we were 2 for not many in the England test we won. These outstrip any other openers 'achievements', bar McCullum, since Richardson (unless you want to count Fulton's two centuries vs England or Rutherfords 171 on debut).

It's been a low-scoring 2016 for Latham, however Australia's new ball attack, South Africa in South Africa and then India in India with the spinners on early are three of the most difficult challenges you could imagine for a young batsman.

He's usually so well organised that I don't doubt he'll improve and do better next time he comes up against such challenges.

Latham's average for the year particularly suffered from scoring 8 runs at 2.66 in South Africa, bearing in mind that one of those dismissals was an unlucky caught behind decision. He's hardly the first NZer to struggle on their first tour of SA though - Williamson and Taylor the other recent examples.

First tour of South Africa
Crowe, Nov 1994, age 32 : 134 at 22.33
Taylor, Nov 2007, age 23: 44 at 11.00
Williamson, Jan 2013, age 22: 43 at 10.75

(Fleming bucks the trend by averaging 38 in that 94/95 series)

Ouch, below James Marshall!

There are 20 other openers over the last couple of decades in that zone either side of Guptill too.
I think Guppy is probably a smidge better than that but his current form is poor. Has certainly been pretty unfortunate at times, but he isn't really good enough to carry with that misfortune. A 100 in the second innings would catapault him immediately to Marshall Twin A - Worried.
