But I don't know that you have to necessarily give up one set of skills to develop another in the same discipline. I think that's what makes great players great. They do adapt to different conditions in different places and play accordingly. For example, the WPNCOS would ideally adapt his style to different conditions. So would Ashwin. I look at it as a measure of a player that they're able to perform well in different places. It's not a determinant of them warranting a place in a team at any given time, but it is a determinant (IMO) in whether they warrant a place in AT teams for their countries. So, for example, Mike Hussey doesn't really rate a mention as an AT Australian player despite having a great average, because his home record and away records are so seriously skewed one way. Doesn't' mean he wasn't a very fine player for Australia or didn't warrant a place. It just means he isn't the player some of the other blokes in the argument are.

So it goes with Ashwin, Lyon, Sehwag etc, in my opinion anyway.

Well, I agree to an extent but you gotta admit the advantage Sehwag or Ashwin give in 5 out of the 10 test playing nations is something you dont really get with a Lyon or a Hussey... With Sehwag and Ashwin (assuming current record to be indicative of where he will end up) in your side in those conditions, you are almost guaranteed to succeed, right? When the dominance is to that extent, I start to think we need to give room for adjustments on how we rate them.

Not saying they will walk into AT XIs here, but surely the consideration has to be more for these two than say, Mahela or Hussey or Yousuf...

Wagner batted eleven behind not only Sodhi but also Boult in the first Test. I thought it was weird he was behind Boult but he definitely shouldn't be ahead of Sodhi. I think I'd go Sodhi-Patel-Wagner-Boult. They've got Santner randomly ahead of Ronchi as well.

There is always this thing in my head that keeps saying the #5 should be a more defense oriented player and the #6 a more attacking player. I really dunno why but any test batting order seems to look better to me when it is lined up in that fashion...

I have that strong emotion for ODIs. That's why it boils my blood to see guys like Stokes, Maxwell etc. at no. 5.

I'd suspect Sodhi would bat ahead of him, but while Jeets did back away from Steyn in SA, the reaction was ridiculously overblown. He's a pretty accomplished batsman who put in a particularly guttless effort on a tough tour against some spicy bowling and it's unlikely he will have much issues here.

Yeah, that was cricinfo's probable XI. I'd probably go Sodhi, Patel, Waggers & Boult.

That was made to be a big deal only because it was such a bad look & sent such a "I CBF" message to both the dressing room & back home.

Simon Doull also made sure he gave it the kitchen sink in commentary, and I've heard him refer to it several times since.
