It's not really premature because he pretty much has the best ever home record for a spinner.. No matter how average he is away that gets him into ATG category imo.

look he's a good player but yeah ATG is calling it a bit early imo - especially when you consider how easily batsmen are dismissed in these conversations for having such discrepancies

At the end of the day it's just 20 matches at home though.

No doubt he needs a couple of good away series, but it's still terrific to see somebody able to exploit conditions like this. Herath's away record isnt that great either (though he does have the wins in South Africa and England to show for it).

If he keeps this up for another year or so (with hopefully a couple of good tours), would put him in the elite category - Kumble, Bedi, Chandra, Prasanna, Gupte et al.
Probably too soon to put him quite up there imo. Chandra is massively underappreciated. He won India matches everywhere in the world.

Based on what? Herath's much more of a hometown bully than Ashwon, his numbers are closer to Jadeja's in terms of a crazy variance between home and away.
In terms of the main seam friendly countries Herath's figures are quite a bit better than Ashwin's tbf.

The thing going for Herath is longevity, but in a couple years Ashwin will be a much clearer choice.

I think people here are seriously underestimating Ashwin.. The subcontinent bullies don't count treatment that Mahela went through. Except Ashwin is doing the equivalent of averaging 75 in the subcontinent.

I meant to ask this yesterday, but when did Manjrekar's commentary become quite so cheerleader-ish? I hadn't really noticed it before, but jeez, he makes Harsha Bhogle seem like a hater of Indian cricket by comparison.
