He is pretty much guaranteed to be an Indian great, right?Ashwin bowls terrifically well in India and across similarly slow, cracking, docile wickets but heck, he does what he does. We can't judge him on that but to start labeling him as some sort of great is a bit much atm.
I did enjoy his spell against NZ though and he is a far better bowler than the one who first came on the scene. That loops, control of pace and spin have all improved.
If he can pull out a few fantastic overseas performances you can definitely pen it in. Think he will at some point. Right now its all he needs, he's literally transcended beyond cricket at home.He is pretty much guaranteed to be an Indian great, right?
If you rejig that to just look at his record in Eng/SA/Aus/NZ though, his record is almost in all time **** territory. ****ing Tendulkar has a better record than Ashwin. The only Indian spinner with a worse average (from those with 10+ wickets) is Narendra Hirwani. Improving his record in the seam friendly countries is the big obstacle that Ashwin needs to overcome if he's to be considered as a great at the end of his career.Bowling records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo
Ashwin's record away is already pretty favourable compared to other great Indian spinners, and I reckon he'll certainly improve on that over the next few years.
Still reckon Herath is better though.

Ashwin still a long way down that list in terms of average. ****ing Mark Craig still has a better record than him.Figures for spinners in those countries in the post-murali era.

Really just reads to me like they've for the most part being totally awful for spinners, also looks like he has bowled relatively little in England, South Africa and NZ where spinners probably find the most success.

Only Lyon has taken any wickets in Australia.

I think there's an argument that Ashwin is already India's best ever Test bowler. He is pretty much guaranteed to be an Indian great, right?
Herath must have acquitted himself better than I remember during that horror 12/13 tour, decent figures.Figures for spinners in those countries in the post-murali era.

it's only really decent off the back of his away records in SL & WI though, home-like great conditions for Ashwin against weak opposition. This is to be expected to be fair on him, but just making sure that point isn't lost. Also, his weak away record is a bit overblown imo. Averaging 33 is actually pretty decent for a finger spinner.
