*Official* English Football Season 2016-17

Yeah, it's another thing that can emphasise the direness of the international break really, especially if the team you follow has just completed a really exciting signing or something. Kind of like being told on Christmas eve that Christmas has been postponed for a week.

Ha, was just saying to a friend the other day that given I play cricket every weekend in the summer, it kind of feels like the season doesn't really start for me until this weekend. Really excited for it though.

Agreed, it's a load of absolute ****. Should do all of the qualifying at once at the end of the season.

On a serious note, is there any good reason why they don't do this? The only ones I can think of are invariably linked to money (I.e. I don't imagine attendance would be all that great - totally anecdotal but I imagine part of the supposed allure of international fixtures is due to them not occurring very often, although still far too frequently for everyone in this thread it would seem).

Probably the only reason I can think of is that if you do it during an off-season, it puts too much strain on the players and they'll invariably pull out.

Might be talking out of my arse though.

Well the total number of games remains the same, so the club season would get shorter to accommodate it.

Serves you all right for supporting behemoths. The only weekends we'll get off will be because we've gone out of the FA Cup/FA Trophy or because our opposition play on leisure centre fields that mean postponements after a bit of wind.

The answer, btw, is to ditch international football altogether. Allardyce's new job proves that.

Well under the end-of-season proposal they would happen even less often, so by your logic attendance would improve. I think attendance would probably improve anyway. I don't really know why they don't do it, I can't think of a strong counter-argument. I can't think of what the political roadblock is either, I'd have thought most FAs, national teams, and clubs would prefer it.

I guess it's just a huge change and there's no obvious way to do it incrementally, so it's unlikely to get through a conservative institution like UEFA/FIFA.

Yeah probably this. Also there is a wish to get the players 'home' occasionally (although it's probably mainly expressed by federation suits who want to get people through turnstiles in their own country)

I don't think they'd have less necessarily, it would just be more infrequent. But yeah I largely agree.

Lol at us conceding a goal to a long ball and flick on. Blind would get dropped from a pub team for that defending.

We're getting schooled.
