Is absorbing test cricket, relentless bowling as mentioned above, but also a much better pitch for test match cricket than the flat ODI-style pitches the Kiwis played on in Aust (except Adelaide) and at home last summer. Nothing wrong with a little seam movement and a little variable bounce.

SA pitches tend to be quite good... give a bit to everybody. Also a decent variation across the country..

And it's not like they're shy of decent 4th seamer options either depending on the quota complications.

Morkel, Abbott pretty good. Amazing neither can get in as first choice anymore.

i think that, though steyn's the better bowler, big vern is more essential to team balance just because his skills are less replicable in sa's depth

rabada has it in him to crank up the pace and abbott's not a bad yorker exponent, and though they obviously aren't as refined in either as steyn is they can still do a fair job in his place - they don't have a depth bowler with the absurd control and swing philander can get and that's why he was missed more, imo

This is the best bowling as an attack we've seen in ages. Hats off to KW, not easy hanging in there with wickets falling all round. Not bad from Nicholls as well.

No.. will never drop Philander, people always say that he will get smacked in flat/subcontinent conditions and he always does well. He is accurate and always find something from the seam/pitch.
