Olympics - does anyone actually care anymore?

It was a close fight but Yoka won rounds 2 and 3, IMO, and did enough to clearly win the fight. He's a much more skillful boxer.

Classic counter-puncher fight where people who don't know much about boxing watching the fight won't pick it up.
Yea us ****wits who watch the French guy being clearly hurt in the 1st and 2nd round, watching him get hit harder and more often, with plenty of body shots, didn't pick up the beautiful nuance of someone who holds the brace position for most of the fight and throws about 30 powder puff punches but manages to connect with a better percentage.

So how the hell did the one judge have the frog winning all 3 rounds then?

If it had been 2-1 on rounds and 2-1 to the Frog I could have accepted it as a tight decision but to have one card saying it was 3-0 to the frog was a joke.

Boxing is just an altogether terrible sport in which the judging is even more subjective than the dance and gymnastics events, but at no point is it remotely pleasant or interesting to watch.

"the French Guy" is probably the number 1 amateur heavyweight in the world, and has beaten the likes of Joseph Parker and others who hit much, much harder than Joyce.

He's a far better boxer. Joyce did well to make the fight somewhat close.

I gave round 1 to Joyce, purely on volume of punches. Another judge could see things differently and reward the counterpuncher a bit more. Not that difficult to understand.

It's possible to have given rounds 1 and 3 to Joyce, really. So it's possible for the judges to have given Joyce the fight; it wouldn't have been a robbery. I wouldn't have though; for me Yoka clearly won. I'd definitely err on the side of giving Yoka all 3 rounds than Joyce 1 and 3.

I reckon the Croatian dude that Yoka fought in the semi-final has a better claim to being hard done by than Joyce.

Who gives a ****.

The French guy was in trouble twice, got hit more often than he hit Joyce, got hit harder than he hit Joyce. Therefore he should have lost, comfortably.

Looking good, more stylish, or being more efficient is irrelevant. The better boxing performance lost.

Sorry mate, it's not.

And particularly in Olympic boxing, which is 3 rounds by necessity, it's pretty reasonable for a judge to give a high weighting to efficiency.

Also, I don't think he was ever in trouble. The commentators were weird, saying Joyce had hurt him, but it never looked like it to me.

Not to piss on the NZers parade for Willis, but 3:50.00 as a winning time of a 1500? Really lads? That is a time from the 1930s.

Also a 5000m final without a Kenya medal just feels wrong
Heh, yeah, it was shockingly slow through those first two laps. Barely 20 kmh. Was basically a 2 lap warm-up for an 800m race. Rudisha would've won this at a canter if he'd choosen to compete in it.

The old NZ post-games funding debate will be on for young and old again. Not sure Cycling will be quite so bullish in their case this time around.

FFS, it turns out Eliza McCartney played on the same netball team as Lorde. It's getting harder to refute jokes about NZ's smallness.

Have loved Rio. Watched sports we see little of on tv and really enjoyed it.
Also watched women's boxing which I kind of feel uncomfortable with as I do men's boxing, and loved the rugby 7's. Shall miss coming home of an evening and it not being on.
