I don't get why England fans get so worked up when the top order falters. The main batting line up starts now with Bairstow. 300+ easily on the cards.
Because it's feckin annoying and not what a top order is supposed to do.

It's not really surprising that it makes people forget about all previous good performances

England should bowl first when they win the toss at home. They have recent history of destroying teams for <150 a.o (both against India and Australia on their previous visits) and then making the same track look flat, when they get to bat after the sun starts shining towards the end of day 1. Visiting teams generally struggle to cope with overhead conditions on day 1, and the game is all but over in a couple of sessions.
No they should bat better. Overhead conditions can come at any time during the match.

A good batting performance and England are 100-1 at lunch. An average one and they're 90-2. Three Mickey Mouse/rank shite dismissals and one good ball and you have this situation.

Root was the disappointing dismisal. He played too loose throughout his innings really and the ball was zipping around. He played really disciplined early in first innings at Lords and Manchester - but he just seemed like he wanted to play his shots today from ball one.

It's a particularly poor dismisal because it's isn't going to zip around all day at the Oval. Likely after lunch on day 1 it's going to be flat - but it's getting to lunch on day 1 and Root was just giving the opposition too many opportunities to take his wicket.

Hales also seemed to kind of have the same attitude of 'It's the oval, it's flat, I'm going to play my shots'.

Hales just strikes me as pretty dumb. He will work on improving one thing but by doing that he'll push something else out of his brain and forget about that.

Yeah Root was the one who angered me the most. Cook chopped on a long hop which is obviously annoying but isn't a pattern. Hales and Vince probably just aren't good enough but Root edged two, flashed at a few more and then gets out against ball going across him yet again. I don't understand why after playing like he did in Manchester he would alter his style from that at all? Obviously he isn't going to make hundreds every time he bats but the thought process I just don't get.

So who's the next cab off the rank for England assuming Hales doesn't make it out the other side. Compton doesn't get another crack does he?

Bell-Drummond I guess. I'm not that keen but then maybe the Bangladesh series could be used to blood a couple of guys.

I don't think he realises this yet.
