Bad decision to play Sohail today. This is the time when Misbah and Arthur should have made a brave move - Yes he got 5 wickets but he is not fit. Give Imran a game.

Cook off to his customary flying start again.
I think in the past people have characterised Cook as defensive when it's not particularly accurate. He's just entirely reactive. If you give him room or bowl on his pads he will always score, if you tie him up he will almost always get tied up. He's scored at a 50+ strike rate in most of his heavy scoring series.

Don't think NZ have a better attack than Pakistan, considering the value of Yasir over anything NZ have in the spin department.
True about Yasir, not that Hales has hung around long enough to face him very often.

And I don't really have any idea whether Lyth is better than Hales anyway. I suppose the selectors are trying as hard as possible to give him the chance to succeed because they have no more idea than the rest of us who might be a better bet.

From 1976? Yeah, he was quite something, especially batting without a helmet.
I've only really ever seen clips of him on grainy youtube footage, so seeing him on a large screen with a clear picture makes the extent of his pace visible.

Maybe but Lyth certainly never got to play an attack as poor as Sri Lanka which is the only team Hales has made runs against. I don't actually think that Lyth was treated at all harshly and Hales deserved this entire series but not convinced one is much better than the other.

I take your point, but he is above 75 for this series...

I think they're right to give him more of a chance than Lyth, but that's because I'd have picked Hales over Lyth in the first place, rather than anything Hales has shown in Test cricket.

There does seem to be an element of Ashes failures counting double. I don't think Ballance, who was England's most consistent player over the previous 18 months to the 2015 Ashes, would have been dropped against a different side. And Ravi Bopara's failure in the 2009 Ashes sullied him forever compared to the three consecutive tons preceding it that earned him very little.

What I would say is that if you can tie Cook down for a prolonged period, he will lose confidence in his scoring shots - particularly the extra cover drive which we've seen a lot of this series - and you'll see him mishitting a lot of poor balls that he would usually score against. He's barely missed a thing this series.

Except that ball. Are we really supposed to believe Iftikhar is 25?
