Best spinner in the world?

This isn't a poll, as it will obviously change in the future and I couldn't be bothered putting too many names up.

Who do you think? It looks to be out of Herath, Shah and Ashwin. I would've had Lyon up at the same level, but he's fallen behind imo.

Haha I knew this topic was just around the corner with all 3 performing so well in the recent past.

Neither Shah nor Ashwin have the body of work that Herath has and so he should comfortably be number 1 now.

But after Herath, Ashwin vs Shah would be one of the more controversial topics of CW in the future..in Bagapath's words - "biggest licensed whorehouse"

Couple of the most disappointing spinners in the world (from an Australian perspective): Fawad Ahmed & Ashton Agar. What happened to these guys? Right now was supposed to be the time when they asserted themselves, what's going on with these blokes?

I liked what I saw from Ashwin in Australia last time. It's hard down under for most foreign spinners normally but I thought he bowled well. But I'm a fan of Herath so maybe Herath > Ashwin. I'll enjoy watching Shah this summer

Agar had a decent time with the bat last shiled season, I assumed he was trying to turn himself into an AR. Could be a useful option down the road for him. It's worked for SOK, who I think is stil the best spinner in the country.

I haven't seen much of Agar but debut innings withstanding he just looks like a poor man's Mitchell Santner to me.

Ashwin will fill his boots against touring sides like Australia in home dust bowls but will be a non-entity in away matches in England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Yasir Shah I expect to be actually a factor in those countries. So i guess he'll be the number one spinner after Herath calls it a day.

This comes up a lot against Ashwin but Herath averages 43 away and hasn't made a match winning impact in England, Australia or SA either. He's also filling his boots against Australia failing to cope with the spin at home. I don't think you can really call Herath ahead on the touring front.

He is, however, a far superior batsman.

I'm a big herath fan but I think he is overrated here. For one, he has gone thru the "spinner's prime" phase so he has all the tricks unlike ashwin or Yasir, but also he actually isn't that effective outside Sri lanka.

Right now I think you could pick any of the three based on current form. Careerwise it's herath but that's obvious. Ashwin will surpass him there within 5 years most likely if current trajectories are maintain.

Herath certainly isn't the same match winner outside SL, but he bowled his team to a win in SA in 2011, almost pulled them to a victory in Sydney a few years ago and bowled way better than his figures suggest in England. Thats definitely way better than anything Ashwin has done so far.

I reckon Yasir will end up the best of the three. Atleast when it comes to being an all conditions man.

Yasir does indeed have more tools to take wickets outside of Asia. I'm not sure that Ashwin does but he does appear to be working on them.

However, Ashwin and Yasir also benefit from playing in their home conditions just as much as Herath does.

Moreover, Herath bowled extremely well in Australia. And while I don't want to diminish SL's astonishing improvement in the pace department in the past 3 years (from ****ing garbage to almost passable international standard), he has very much been a lone figure. I thought he bowled well South Africa, OK in England and was completely nullified in NZ because that's where all spinners die so that's not exactly surprising. Play him in WI and he'll destroy them. He's already dethroned Ajmal too, so in boxing terms he's taken out the reigning champ.

Finally, given that the world does actually include Asia, I don't see any reason to hold Herath's overseas record against him. He's just a bloody good bowler.

Moreover he's a damn fine specimen of a plump short banker. Would smash.
