A Domestic Cricket contract is not going to help buy a house in Auckland. Maybe a 2 bedroom Unit in Otahuhu. Auckland will remain a local team. Contrast Konrad Hurrell ,on his reported Warriors package of $500,000 p.a. before his recent departure.

Well maybe if Otago had done a better job of shepherding Duffy's career in a good direction from 2011-2016, sure.

The phrase 'nicking off at the first opportunity' is probably better attached to Michael Bracewell's 2015/16 Plunket Shield campaign tbh. Especially when there's already four or five okayish under-25 seamers in the Otago mix already, who'll all be looking to call dibs on the new ball over Smith.

Calling him a rat if he did move would just be taking short-sighted parochialism too far and to the detriment of New Zealand overall tbh. Now Wellington's got quite a thoughtful and clever asset in Arnel to try to weave a silk purse out of Bacon and co., again. No-one really wins there.

Though Kippax, you might also suggest the Smith not squander the gold of his days blown around the Basin Reserve, trying to improve the hopeless Wellington, giving his life away to the Arnels, the ghost of Siddons and the mediocre players whose names I forget. The UK has today voted for Brexit and to LEAVE the EU. How quickly will the ECB react and where will this leave " Kiwi" cricketers who have relied on the ECJ HR Rulings in Bosman and Kolpak to play in the UK ? Brexit could affect UK based Rugby and League players as well.

Bosman - Bosman took court action against the European Football authorities, RFC Liege and the Belgian Football authorities; he argued that payment of transfer fees for free agents conflicted with an EU citizen's right to free movement within employment. The court ruled in favour of Bosman as the system, as it was constituted, placed a restraint on freedom of movement of EU workers and was prohibited by Article 39 of the EU treaty of Rome.

Kolpak- this ruling extended Bosman. Kolpak,a Slovakian Handball player, was not from the EU but from a country with a free trade relationship with the EU. So the European Court of Justice's findings meant that any player from any nation which had such a relationship with the EU could also freely play as a sports professional. Countries with associate trading relationships with the EU include South Africa, Zimbabwe and several in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands eg: Samoa and Tonga.

Promising NZ U19 and North Otago seamer Nathan Smith is another who will be available for large parts of the domestic season but has decided to firstly complete his final year at Waitaki Boys HS. Experienced seamers Craig Smith and Brad Scott were not available for contract consideration due to work commitments however both will be available for team selection at various extended stages of the season.

The 13 contracted players announced today are:

Everyone knows I'm a sycophant but I reckon he's set for a big year, particularly in limited overs stuff. Done a lot of learning in the UK about playing on the front foot, his old habits of preying on anything short doesn't cut the mustard on low decks over there.

Pretty exciting year for Auckland as far as batsmen are concerned. O'Donnell, Phillips, Chapman all young guns, Raval with exposure to the highest level, Guptill-Bunce looking to show his season wasn't a fluke, then the usual slap and tickle from the middle order.

On first glance that appears to be the case. But you've got to remember that Auckland's arsey medium-pacers have been plenty effective in recent seasons. I'm betting Grobbelaar and CdG will continue to take plenty of wickets at a good average next season.

Bennett & McPeake will be lethal at the Basin. Hamish Marshall will provide the lynchpin and take pressure off Papps, Murdoch & Pollard. I think they could come second in the Plunket Shield.
