I'm sorry but in no way does Guptill get to claim the 5 spot after having failed so miserably as an opener. It's unfair. Hell, I'd rather they pick Colin Munro than Guptill at 5. Alternatively, Brownlie as South Africa specialist.

And yeah, I think Anderson being left out is a mistake.
TV1 reckon Anderson has a back injury.

Fair to assume that Brownlie is out of contention, perhaps for good? If he can't get a look in against Australia and South Africa his preferred opponents, and if the selectors are prepared to select a third opener ahead of him it can't be a good sign for his opening aspirations. Funnily he'd be a good fit in the middle order with one spot vacant now.

Happy for Raval though he'll probably have to wait for his chance. The India tour might not be a bad time//place for a new opener if it comes to that.

Also disappointed to see Anderson miss out, apparently because he may not be able to bowl, but it's hard to see him develop as a test player if he keeps having to sit out every other series. Hope Santner makes himself indispensable, otherwise the number 6 slot will be as much of a revolving door as the opening one (having said that, would be interested to know where Neesham is in the picture).

I just can't see Nicholls as test quality yet. ODI squad player for sure, but even then he isn't 100% certainty IMO.

Ravs deserves his shot. Guptill to 5 cures 2 head aches for us, potentially. Takes over Baz's spot nicely.

If Henry isn't taking the new ball, Wagner has 3rd seamer role. Doug gives you a little more batting, but against Zim you shouldn't be picking bowlers because they can bat a bit..
I don't like either Nicholls or Guptill as middle order options. Would like for Watling to eventually move to number 5 (a la Alec Stewart), and let a younger batsman or keeper take up the number 6/7 spot and grow there.

How about just racking up five tons in a domestic cricket season first, like he never actually ticked off. Honestly, it's like the posting trajectory of Cribb vs. Howsie or something. Cribbage graduated from his inauspicious gumnuts beginnings, and you could see him maturing as a poster with every year. Howsie's always going to be worth having around on CW for his boshing and his good eye, but will always be too prone to having his credulity manipulated and being found out (Zak Gibson not actually being 150kph anytime soon, and so on). It'll still be the same in 2025 as it is right now with Howsie posting.

That's easy. He was banished to GamePlanet, a couple of years ago. Bahnz is sort of like Bradburn, he'll occasionally do a copy-paste to put Devcich onto the big stage.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Don't fancy the idea of Nicholls becoming a thing after seeing more of his technique tbh so as I'm bowler bias I'd like to see this combo

1. M Guptill
2. T Latham
3. K Williamson
4. R Taylor
5. MJ Santner
6. BJ Watling+
7. I Sodhi
8. N Wagner
9. M Henry
10. T Boult
11. T Southee

Light on batting but against Zimbabwe we're probably gonna bat once, and it'd be interesting to see how Santner fares with more responsibility with the aim of him dropping to 6 vs SA with Nicholls or Ronchi at 5 (shudder).

I wouldn't mind a trial of

Latham
Guptill
Raval
Williamson
Taylor
Santa
Watling
I like the idea of your best batsman at 4, always have. Australia seem to have been believers in it as well over a long period of time. Ross has been that guy for us over the last few years, and now is not our best batsman. Kane was/is at 3, based on clearly having the best technique to conquer pace and swing bowling. But he's also our best player of spin. I just think 4 is the best fit for him in all conditions. Tangibly, it's probably dependent on whether there's a three that is technical proficient and is able to bat time - like we would've liked Daniel Flynn to be, or perhaps hoped Brownlie might've been. So if Jeet can be that guy (have serious doubts given his flaws) then I love your line-up. Maybe a Ben Smith can make that role his own over time.

But for now, he's definitely the best fit for our side at 3. I don't mind NZTails' side. It seems lofty for Santa to be at 5 but is he a more capable player now and in the future than Nicholls will be? I probably think so and others might too. Gives us the opportunity to play the second spinner and four seamers as well, which I like.

Corrected it for you:

Maybe a Bharat Popli can make that role his own over time.

My previous views on Bharat Popli, and pathological refusal to concede any opinion I have - past or present - is wrong, mean that is something that will never be typed by these fingers.

To me, Bharat Popli is Carl Cachopa with a tan.

What do you guys make of Hamish Bennett and Hamish Marshall picked up by Wellington Firebirds? Short sighted?
I like it. One of the more potent fast bowlers in NZ and a batsman who might score reasonably heavily and set an example. Hopefully Bennett can stay fit & the Firebirds can push for that elusive Plunket Shield win.

Bennett belongs on a brisk Patumahoe, we all know it. That spell to Kohli in early 2014 that turned him into a slavering dog once he got the dismissal means he probably knows it too.

Yeah, there he is. An amusingly generous final round pitch for our new groundsman to prepare for Bennett, Nuttall and Jamieson, when he could've turned the taps right off and got it powdery for a Jeets vs. Tastle contest, where Wellington could've competed a bit better. I guess his ignorance/apathy ended up having a bright side to it, as far as Bennett's signature goes.

Yeah I certainly hope Edgar's attempts to make Nathan Smith aware of how uncluttered and exciting the new ball opportunities are up here still went ahead.
