I love Gazza to bits and he would probably have achieved a lot more had he not crippled himself, but even so.......................

Gazza was as good as Messi and Ronaldo
He is clearly the best England player of the last 30 years and who knows how good he would have been without the injury. Even after being a crock and a drunk he scored one of the greatest ever tournament goals in Euro 96.

World class is such a crap phrase but by most definitions of what it actually means England have had plenty in the past 20 years.

No, the players like Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham and all that team are so over rated it unreal.
You're being totally disingenuous. You could quite easily make an argument for them, and plenty of others (e.g. Shearer, Owen, Seaman, Campbell, Cole, Ferdinand, Terry, Adams etc...) being, at one time, amongst the best players in the world in their positions.

Well as I said 'world class' is such an inane term, it can mean almost whatever you want it to mean but Michael Owen? Clearly 'world class' for a short while. Then I don't seriously think you can argue that Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes and at times Rooney were not players at an elite level. Then there are the defenders, Cole, Campbell, Ferdinand, I should probably even mention Terry. Yeah the golden generation thing was dire but there were some very good players around.

Australia 4 England 1 - they were all ****.

No onecomes close to Stan Lazaridies or Kevin Muscat, easily the two premier footballers of the last 25 years.

Hard to look past Shearer for being a truly world class player IMO. Then you have the genius of Le Tissier who i'd personally put on a platform of his own. Scholes has to be mentioned, just ask any other midfielder of the last 20 years who they think is the best midfielder of their time and it usually comes back as Scholes. I always feel McManaman gets overlooked a bit due to the fact England always tried to shunt him in out of position.

If anything I reckon England's mid 90s players are under-rated. I'd back their Euro 96 team to comfortably beat any other England side in the Premier League era.

Gascoigne was World-class in the early nineties, but of course a comparable massive let-down after his self-inflicted injury in the Cup Final, lost a good yard of pace, maybe more. Still he was technically beyond perhaps everyone I've seen for England, except for maybe Hoddle, but Hoddle was never as dynamic.
