The courts are undoubtedly more homogenised in modern times but there's no doubt that Murray has stepped up his clay game in the last year or two. I've liked what I've seen from him recently and he's definitely a live chance in Paris.

The French Open should be a great contest this year. Obviously it'll be between Murray, Djokovic and Nadal, however I give Nishi an outside chance too. Don't think the 'Stanimal' will firing many shots this year.
Thiem if he gets a good draw could go somewhat close, has shown plenty of quality on this surface. Then I suppose you really are reaching, Kyrigos maybe?

The likes of Goffin, Berdych and Monfils shouldn't get past the quarter finals.

Raonic not doing much recently either and Ferrer seems to be on the serious decline, although knowing him he will bore his way to a quarter final as usual.

Kyrgios more likely than Thiem imo, and Nishi more likely than both of them.

The other outsider of course who every now and then makes a semi final of a Slam is Tsonga.

But in terms of winning, think I have the same order that Robbie Koenig has - Novak, Muzz, Nadal as 3 most likely, with Stan a chance if he "goes nuclear" (as Jason Gooddall put it last night)

Not a shock as he has missed a lot of tennis this year, best to focus on grass where he still an absolute contender instead of his worst surface clay where he would be merely making up the numbers. Sensible call.

yeah but it will be strange not seeing federer in the main draw at a major...it's been several years since that happened...

Federer out is good. He should do what Delpo is doing (although Delpo isn't injured). Skip the French and concentrate on grass and Wimby. Fed wasn't winning the French with his injury, even if he could actually get on court. He wasn't going past 2nd or 3rd round with his mobility so hampered.

May as well concentrate on Wimbledon.

Really disappointed to see that one of the best players isn't taking part in this tournament. I'm just wishing he has a good recovery and is fit and firing at Wimbledon so that he can add to his total number of Slams won, good luck Jerzy.

Is there anyone outside say the top 16 who you think will get into the quarters?

For me im going for Lopez in Berdych and Ferrer's quarter. Perhaps someone can get past Raonic/Cilic too.

The Berdych/Ferrer quarter seems ripe for an upset. Lopez probably won't threaten on clay, instead I think Cuevas and Monaco could do damage there.

Wawrinka section could get interesting, he's not the most reliable seed and Raonic/Cilic aren't at their best on clay. Pouille could go deep given his current form (though he has had luck) and maybe Dimitrov wakes up....

On paper I'd give Kohlschreiber/Almagro a chance of beating Goffin and Tsonga but that probably won't happen.

If Kyrgios was in any other of the 5-8 seeds section then I'd tip him to make the quarters but Nishikori is the favourite for that match IMO.

As for unseeded players making the second week (i.e. 4th round or better), Zverev has a good shot, I already mentioned Monaco and Almagro as potential bolters, Rosol maybe a shot given he'll face Wawrinka early (where he may be more upset-prone) and there's not really anyone else that looks unbeatable in that section and Jono's boy has a good chance of facing off with Murray (which is easy to say now but looked possible for a while beforehand - Paire and Isner are very beatable), Coric's draw looks pretty good before Djokovic and Dzumhur beat a couple of Top 10 players earlier in the year....

Shame that there doesn't seem to be too many good clay specialists these days, else some of the quarters would look very interesting.
