New Zealand doom and gloom thread

Fear not, I'm back from my punishment and I see that the actions that lead to my ban and the people involved all seem to be banned now too, I can go back to just posting Cricket :)

It is doom and gloom for NZ again unless:

1) Williamson starts scoring some runs again
2) Taylor is back to his best form
3) Ryder is recalled
4) And most importantly Southee and Boult start swinging the ball again.

I'd settle for not seeing Bracewell selected again, Sodhi actually showing he has what it takes to be a match winner for NZ this season and Santner becoming our best all rounder.

Sodhi's been taking wickets with long hops all season tbf. This whole "he's proven himself at Plunket level" is a scorecard-readers myth IMO.

Turning into a serious limited overs option, no doubt, but his red-ball stuff is still very raw and jammy. Won't win Test matches the way he's bowling at the moment.

I know; that was the depressing thing watching back the replays of his wickets. When I heard he'd taken seven for, I was expecting to see him getting the traditional wrong'un + a few edge to slips wickets, not a series of half trackers that people spoon to fielders. I'm not expecting much from him, but it would be interesting if NZ had a wicket taking leg spinner in their side as a lot of sides find interesting ways to get out to leggies.

Anyone else watching the Cricket Max pop up channel on Sky? This is some classic stuff. This NZ vs England tour from 1997, we were touring Australia at the time, so there's some pretty woeful names in the Max Blacks!

Yes. Ian Austin had an arse like a bus and the less said about Carl Bulfin's hair the better.

EDIT: ****ing Ian Austin.

Who's the modern Carl Bulfin equivalent?
There isn't anyone quite like Bulfin running around at the moment in NZ; on his day he was fast and got great late movement but he only really seemed to have his day in the Max format. He probably should have played more for NZ considering his raw talents and our lack of bowling stocks at the time.

Maybe Shaun Tait if he was 15kph slower?

I don't think there's been a Carl Bulfin before or will be again.

Running in, bowling pretty brisk pace with blonde dreads and sunnies still on, what a look!

The only guy who ever got close was that guitarist from Zed.

Heh, no surprises that NZ was the only country out of the top 8 to be left out of the intro sequence for the '99 World Cup. Funny to think of it nowadays given how much adoration there is for McCullum and his brand of cricket in England, but back then NZ really were seen by the English press as a boring, mediocre stain on world cricket back in the 90's. You can still find some really scathing articles on the quality of the NZ team from the '99 World Cup. The team of '99 probably did as much as any team in history to win respect for NZ cricket.

New Zealand actively enjoyed giving itself a slap and throwing a pie in its own face back in that era too though, tbh. It's hard to imagine a New Zealander born in the 1990s participating in Chris Martin's "like me, it's out now!" Pulp Sport gag, isn't it.

Wagner should never be dropped again. This year 7 Tests 32 wickets at 21.87 econ 2.68 s/r 48.9. Also 32 wickets for Lancs. Hope we get him back next season.

Boult 36.57
Southee 46.14
Bracewell 59.40
Henry 64.66
