...All in all, a really disappointing series from us. Sure, we've had some injury problems this summer but - Taylor aside - we were theoretically at full strength here and just didn't show up. There's been a few signs over the last year that the team has been declining a bit from the heights of a year ago, and they all came to fruition here. We need the coach/captain/senior players to really think about what has gone wrong, identify the areas we most need to improve and then work like hell at fixing it.

CBF writing much about Australia other than that they've been really impressive. Yeah, they were on the receiving end of three big pieces of luck - the two tosses plus Voges in Wellington - but there was far more than just luck separating the two teams. Their batsmen have made big scores, and their bowlers got the ball to move all over the place and were just relentlessly accurate. Field sets were well thought out too, and notably adapted as things happened.
Just looking at Southee & Boult's figures against Sri Lanka this season and they aren't markedly different to the 2 tests against Sri Lanka last season (Craig was the main destroyer at the Basin). Admittedly, that was a stronger Sri Lankan line up with Sangakkara.

We're missing a trick by not encouraging Pacific island and Maori kids to play cricket. Faced an island kid in the nets in the other day who had never played cricket before in his life, he was without a doubt the quickest bowler I had ever faced.. Had me struggling lol
That's yet another thing about the tragedy of Jesse Ryder. Had he not ****ed up so spectacularly he might have encouraged a lot of Maori kids to take up the game.

Ili Tugaga and Tipene Friday are still about. Te Ahu Davis and Taraia Robin were part of that generation who had their actions affected by the academy.

The figures might be similar, I CBF checking, but they were bowling so much better. Moving the ball around and far more accurate. The pitches were flatter too IIRC (maybe with the one-day greentop at the Basin excepted).

That's my impression too although I haven't watched much of them bowling in these home tests.

Yeah, those first two aren't really going anywhere though.

It's a topic that seems to come around in a bit of a cycle. Particularly if we're not going well. Hopefully the World Cup last year will have an impact - though any positive effect from that is likely to take a decade before we see if it amounts to anything.

Interesting that Smith is getting reprimanded for this yet Mahela got away with swearing his head off very clearly during that Vettori LBW decision a couple of summers back.

Virat got away with stuff too. Clearly fines are only handed out to the uggos.
There was a really horrid one from Dhoni recently where he pretty much bullied the umpire. It worked though and it was pre decision so a but different I guess.
