The only alternative actually named in the Test squad to playing Nicholls would be playing both Anderson and Santner in the top 6 and essentially having Anderson play as a specialist bat. In normal circumstances I think I'd absolutely back that, but Anderson is batting with a needle at the moment so I'm not sure it's a better option.

Haha I didn't know Nichols was selected for the tests. Doesn't look a player who'll succeed in the longer format at all tbh. Who is he coming in for?
Ross Taylor is still injured.

The scary thing is the fact that McCullum will retire soon and it seems like Nicholls is first in line to replace him in both formats.

I don't think he really is, it strikes me as more of a one-off moneyball punt on the back of a couple 50's. With so much of the PS to play the next in line won't be sorted properly for a while yet.

Nicholls hasn't done anything to suggest to me he's capable of performing at the top level.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in the thread yet because I wasn't reading earlier, but this is the best batting tail on paper I've seen in an international side for ages, I think. Sodhi at #11 is h4x.
