Debuts & Retirements draft

Grumpy

U19 Vice-Captain
Grumpy Mondays

1. Bill Ponsford
2. Hanif Mohammad
3. Glenn Turner
4. Ricky Ponting
5. Richie Richardson (c)
6. Joe Root (+)
7. Mushtaq Ali
8. Bill Barnes (2)
9. Hugh Trumble (4)
10. Tibby Cotter (1)
11. Claude Carter (3)

Like I mentioned earlier, this team will be spending a lot of time on the field. Declaration bowling will be common. Will have earned our namesake. The bowling still has some class - Cotter was known for his extreme pace, Barnes was a match winning seamer, Trumble was an offie who could bowl in all conditions, and Carter was a SLA known to exploit matting conditions.

The good thing is we have a good chance to save a lot of matches. Hanif is known mostly for his match saving marathon innings. Glenn Turner played in a team not known for its bowling. And the team bats deep. Number 9 has a Test century and a few Test 50's. No 10 has 4 FC 50's and No 11 has 3 FC 50's.

Insane depth in batting. Number 8 is one of the best batsmen of his era.

International Vice-Captain
Peter Nevill 2015-

1. Arthur Morris
2. Roy Fredericks
3. Clem Hill
4. Herbie Taylor [c]
5. Ken Barrington
6. Ian Botham [1]
7. George Giffen [5]
8. Peter Nevill [+]
9. Mitchell Johnson [2]
10. Shane Warne [4]
11. Bill O'Reilly [3]
Could be a winning team. I was hoping to go down the Barrington-Fredericks... path until you got there first - would have ended up with Stollmeyer-Fredericks-Tyldesley-Ranji-Barrington-Armstrong-Ames-Botham-Broad (or Johnson)-Warne-Lohmann which is another ridiculously strong batting line-up but a bit thin (though classy) on bowling.

Nice Team AZH.

I think that Herbie Taylor was the key to this Draft because his career goes all the way from 1912 to Bill O'Reilly in 1932.

4. Garfield Sobers
5. Gerry Gomez
6. Matt Prior

Most oddly balanced side of all-time. So many all-rounders

In contrast to how I felt earlier, I am going to stick with Graeme Smith & choose Josh Hazlewood as my final selection (2014-). May as well pick now as my pick doesn't clash with anyone.

Final XI

1 Bill Brown
2 Graeme Smith
3 Tom Hayward
4 Greg Chappell 6
5 Dean Jones
6 Frank Worrell 3 (c)
7 Frank Woolley 5
8 Denis Lindsay +
9 Bobby Peel 4
10 Josh Hazlewood 2
11 Allan Donald 1

Pretty lopsided team that isn't capable of matching Mr or AZH's teams for the win. I began with Peel, whom I chose because I felt he was the best player available & hadn't done all that much of a forecast or any kind of planning. This turned out to be a bit different to what others had done due to the amount of people who chose players who retired in 1899 in R1, with Howe getting probably the best of that particular bunch in Grace. However it was Mr who ended up snagging the vital selection of Rhodes in R2 & motoring on from there.

I then selected Hayward in R2 having had Clem Hill taken from me by AZH. From there I hit a nice rich vein of players when I selected Woolley, Brown & Worrell, with a view to collecting both Graeme Pollock & Barry Richards, however, Mr mister put those plans to bed. And so I went for Denis Lindsay, which was a pretty good alternative, & then Greg Chappell after momentarily considering doing what schearzie did in picking Jenner, thus opening up Michael Holding as an option.

Chappell was probably a mistake in hindsight; from there I got Jones, Donald (woo!), Smith & Hazlewood, which isn't all that bad, but, apart from White Lightning I think my attack isn't especially awesome.

Thanks everyone for sticking with this draft which had its flaws & was frustrating at times, but I felt it was fun & unique overall.

After all, with all the talk recently here on CW about the same old names getting selected over & over in drafts, just take a look at all the names I can think of off the top of my head that didn't get selected. It's not like they weren't available either.

SF Barnes
Charles Macartney
Keith Miller
Wally Hammond
Jim Laker
Ray Lindwall
Clarrie Grimmett
Hedley Verity
Rohan Kanhai
Fred Trueman
Denis Compton
Neil Harvey
Vinoo Mankad
Len Hutton
Brian Statham
Richie Benaud
Conrad Hunte
Bill Lawry
Bob Simpson
Andy Roberts
Malcolm Marshall
Joel Garner
Gordon Greenidge
Sachin Tendulkar
Abdul Qadir
Matthew Hayden
Adam Gilchrist
Glenn McGrath

Either Walsh, Headley or Pollock should skipper this side.

Schearzie's pick won't have any bearing on mine, so I'll go ahead and complete my side with Chamara Kapugedera as my wicket keeper.

The OS XI:

Sir Jack Hobbs
Bobby Abel
Brian Lara
Stan McCabe (6)
Lindsay Hassett
Chamara Kapugedera (w)
Alan Davidson (2)
Sir Richard Hadlee (1)
Alan Connolly (3)
Uton Dowe (4)
Jack Saunders (5)

Pleased with what I was able to cobble together given the setback I received in 1971. A new ball attack doesn't get much better than Hadlee-Davidson and with Connolly providing decent backup along with Dowe's wild but pacey spells, and Saunders's high quality spin, the attack has nice variety. Love the batting lineup too, with Hobbs being the GOAT opener at the top, Abel being an able (heh) partner. Lara and McCabe's flair at 3 and 4 looks delicious, with Hassett completing a superb top 5.

Where the side falls a bit short is the lack of a true quality all rounder who would've fitted in perfectly at number 6/7. While Davidson and Hadlee are useful with the bat, the team can be in trouble once the top 5 go. It's also a team of contrasts with the absolute cream of the crop (Hadlee, Hobbs, Lara, Davidson) mixed in with spuds like Dowe. Fun side all in all.

What do you think of Sobers-Andy Roberts-Greg Mathews - Glenn McGrath? That's the route I'd have taken if I was in your position.

pollock
richards
lillee
walsh
sehwag

arguably 5 ATGs instead of 3 (sobers, roberts, mcgrath)

i know Sobers is probably worth 2 players but still..

Steve Waugh*
Victor Trumper

Hugh Tayfield (4)
Dale Steyn (1)
Tich Freeman (2)
Charlie Griffiths (3)

Stoddart is a gun FTR. Won the Ashes as captain about eleven million times in a row through the 1890s. Averaged 35 with the bat in conditions where his bowlers Lohmann (average 10), Briggs (average 17) and Peel (average 16) regularly dumped the opposition out for double figures.

Great team, but stop calling him Griffiths

Dude, I went to 2002 thinking you had gone with that change (just like OS) as I badly needed an opener... :(
