Nothing about Abbott's record in any form of the game suggests he should be batting higher than 8? I don't get it.
there's this thing in cricket called "pinch hitter", possibly adopted from baseball, not sure. It's basically when you throw a not-so-good player up the order to have a slog and sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. If a team thinks potential benefit outweighs potential risk then they sometimes give it a shot.

Abbott can hit a big ball, but hasn't done much with the bat in a few years IIRC. Wasn't necessarily a terrible decision at the time imo, obviously easy to say it was in hindsight. The bugger blunder IMO is Botha batting at 9. He's actually a very good player and batting him below the likes of Dwarshuis is bizarre.

Pinch hitters in T20 are idiotic and anyone who thinks they are a good idea is a laughable moron. No surprise Brad Haddin fancied it then.
