Overall standard is just really iffy

Oz batting was dreadful in England for 3 tests

Kiwis were poor in Oz

SA look shot

Windies UGH

Poms are full of bits and pieces players

India and SL couldn't beat Burgey's son's team away from home

Pakistan might actually be the best team but have plenty of question marks over them as well (drug ban, Amir, potential retirements)
I'm out of kneejerk reaction images, but assume this post has a new and creative one in it.

Hardly knee jerk though is it. There isn't an awful lot there that you'd say is wrong based on recent performances.

SA need to not panic with regards to the batting lineup. Amla, Faf, ABDV are all proven test performers, it is just unfortunate that two of them have simultaneously hit bad patches. Elgar just tonned up. Bavuma has looked good, even if he doesn't have big runs to show for it.

Duminy and Stiaan haven't produce much, and have looked a bit out of their depth, but the question should be if there are any batsmen on the bench who can come in and do much better right away? De Kock maybe; has the added bonus that ABDV won't have to keep. What has Roussow been doing lately?

Bowling wise SA have been fine. Again, it's just unfortunate that they were a bowler short for much of this Test.

The worrying aspect seems to be their general confidence. Body language in the field wasn't great. They dropped some catches and missed some chances. Usually that's enough to cost you a game against a good side that is playing well.

I wrote this post a couple of years back and I would say it holds up pretty well.
I have been a bit more skeptical than many here about SA's capacity to be a lasting no.1. Firstly it looks like Kallis is in the decline/retirement phase and that will create a big hole in the team since he contributed so much with bat and ball. Without him at his prime, the SA batting looks merely good rather than excellent and the bowling loses a certain edge.

Secondly SA is struggling to develop a quality test spinner. Perhaps Tahir may develop into one but there is still a long way to go. SA also seems to fall short of producing that third quality pace bowler. Sometimes Morkel looks the part but then he fades away. An attack with Steyn, Philander ,two average bowlers and little or no Kallis looks good rather than great again. And I am still not convinced that Philander will be the kind of ATG bowler who can lead the attack on all surfaces. With Steyn himself on the wrong side of 30, I wouldn't be surprised if this attack and the team in general are already past their peak with the no.1 ranking in jeopardy in a year or two.

When was the last time sa played a 4 test match series ?? Let alone 2 consecutive ones ? There was a period when sa didn't play a test match for 11 months in the last 5 years. I feel sa simply isn't used to that level of pressure over such a short time. I guess it boils down to money.

Would've been 6 years ago when England last toured.

I just think test cricket in south africa will never be again what it used to be , why??
firdose moonda recently suggested they use stephen cook as an opener to help stabilize the batting. But only as a temporary solution. That's why players leave to go play overseas. I recently heard that even philander is considering permanently playing county cricket because the money sucks in south africa. The only way the salaries can increase is if the public spends more money on cricket. Supply and demand. If the cricket is poor no one will watch it. If the cricket is good people will pay to watch it. It is as simple as that .

Hardus I s a good bowler but what rabada now ??
Cover for Abbot, it will be Rabada who replaces Steyn unless they do something stupid and pick Morris because he can "bat". For all their mistakes recently I don't think the saffer selectors are that silly,

Thanks

I assume by tempoary, its probably like Chris Rogers was used for Australia. Pick him and stick with him until he stops performing. You probably get 3 or 4 years out of him before he retires or starts declining.

Vern is probably still pissed off over the whole world cup fiasco thus county cricket with more money and less stress is so tempting.

Concerning county cricket must remember currently The Rand is 24 to the Pound, makes a big difference.

Could argue the general quality of cricket is lower than it has been in the past, but it's pretty hard to compare across eras. Maybe the lower ranked sides have just improved? Either way I probably prefer test cricket with 6/7 sides that could all beat each other than having one or two dominant sides that win 90% of series they play without breaking sweat. Cricket needs as many sides competitive as possible.
