Great knock from Bairstow. Clearly our best Test match wicket-keeper batsmen at the moment, hope this puts the Buttler talk to bed for a while. Hope a hundred comes soon for him, and I think he should be moved up to 6. He has now been stranded essentially and had to slog in both innings, Stokes having done nothing aside from a few flash in the pans to justify the 6 spot at the moment.
Well, lets see how he 'keeps, I think he plays for awhile now, but I wouldn't mind Hales being dropped and Compo opening in the next series, but obviously Hales deserves the series now.

Hales' call up was ace.

They've been trying to pick him for ages, but he keeps failing the little tests they put him through until eventually they just picked him anyway, despite his serious technical flaws for opening in test cricket.

It'd be like Australia picking Finch.

I hope they don't bring Moeen on too soon, he's not one of those spinners that bowls particularly well with the new ball, give the 4 seamers a bit of a go with the new nut.

Expecting him to score a double century now.
Quite so. You can't write Van Zyl off after one innings, however unimpressive it was.

And also agree with whoever was arguing against Moeen having a bowl with the new ball. We have to give our quicks their best chance.

He is waaaay better than Finch in long form

However, England's well is dry so it is understandable

I suppose Woakes is opening to try and swing the new ball, but I'd rather Finn had first use of the ball whilst it's at its hardest.

This is it - Bairstow batted very well in this game but his keeping is way more of a concern than his batting

It's a bit cynical, but if Hales screws up by getting out early, and Compton does well coming in early, England might get the answer to two questions. I must say I can see Hales getting through properly. He did show a lot of promis in FC cricket.

If England do need a new top/middle order batsman, whom will they pick? Ballance deserves another chance, not? The return of Ian Bell? Any more youngster knocking on the door?

Ballance is terrible and Bell is on sabbatical.

As Elgar has been on the pitch for the entire match as we approach tea on Day 4, what's the record for that kind of thing?

Dravid at the Oval vs England fielded for 2 days, carried his bat through India's first innings and then came out to bat again till pretty much the end of day 4.

Furball was surely referencing his hackness in India recently
Maybe he was, but that would count against most of the Saffer batsmen.

tbf I looked up van Zyl's test match history after posting, which does rather support Furball's point. I just don't think it's a good idea to write off a guy in this situation. Tempting fate and all that.
