What happened to Mendis? I still remember when he was an utterly unplayable mystery spinner who looked like he would end up with the Bradman of bowling averages. Now I've just seen him bowl 5 overs of utter filth for 50 runs.

He was never that good, it's just that no-one had ever seen the carrom ball when he came on the scene. As soon as batsmen worked it out he became fairly ordinary. No date he bowled utter pies even by his standards.

That initial awkwardness he brought because of the unique (at the time) carrom ball made him extremely dangerous. Became obvious soon enough that he didn't have much else. He put virtually zero overspin and didn't even have a proper stock ball. Once Sehwag and Sachin started playing him like a medium pacer his specialness was destroyed and he started to look more and more pedestrian.

Fox Sports showing footage of NZ's ICC knock out trophy ODI win in 2000.

Footage of Cairns hitting the winning runs followed by an interview with a young Baz talking about how much of a role model Cairns was to him.

Really disappointed with the SL effort. Sure the batting let the team down initially but the bowlers dished out some serious rubbish. Ajantha Mendis was particularly bad. It is sad to see how poor he us these days. I remember his debut year, he was unstoppable.

Hope Nicholls is never selected for tests. Defence is not tight enough. That said he can rotate the strike quite well in an ODI setting. I was hoping he would get the chance for a cameo and looked OK in this setting. I just hope it doesn't push him to the front of the queue to replace Baz in 5 day cricket.

Hesson's damn near selected Ronchi as a specialist bat in Tests, so I'd put good money on it being some kind of beefcake who gets the nod.

Latham-Guptill-KW-Taylor-Young would be sort of like FM radio playing five Coldplay-style hits in a row, without so much as throwing a bone to the more blue collar tradies. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

A dubious defence hasn't stopped Baz from having a good test career.

I didn't see him bat today but looser players at #5 are fine. I'd always prefer more Lathams, Kanes and Taylors and would gravitate towards a Watling or Young first but Nicholls isn't a bad player. I'm not sure he's a test standard one but fair enough if they give him the nod.

Good day at the cricket today where it felt a lot hotter than 21 degrees. Thought Nicholls looked ok in an easy situation. Don't know about him being BMac's replacement in the test side but I'm sure he'll go back to domestic cricket and pile on the runs like they all do once they get a taste of international cricket.

Haha, Yes it doesn't look good when bolded. Nicholls version 1.0 isn't cut out for test cricket. Put me into the green track bully's camp in the fight for the position. Or Anderson. Anderson probably meets Kippax's criterion that he must have the DNA of a fast scorer.

One point the won me over slightly into the Nicholls camp. Is that as he walked off the field after hitting the winning runs, he turned to Ross and seemed proud to be on the field with him as his team mate.

They looked like they were enjoying a good yarn.

Just looked up his List A average - Jaw dropping average.
