Williamson looks like he's rocked up at a practice session against a club 3rd XI. Looks completely untroubled, only way he's getting out is a brainwave caused by not paying attention.

he's not really paying attention tbh. At about 50% concentration, in CBF mode.

nah from watching this innings you can tell exactly why he averages under 30. An extra yard of pace or a bit more movement and you just know he's boned
Yeah it's hard to think of any other batsmen who are quite competent and then their performance completely falls off a cliff once the difficulty goes past a certain level. Some players might be a bit rubbish here and there no matter the opposition, but are still capable of a decent innings against even the best attacks if one or two things go their way. Guptill isn't. The weaknesses are there to see even for the fast bowlers that aren't good enough to exploit them.

Was thinking though that I'm surprised he hasn't cashed in more up against weaker test attacks, and think he may in future. It's probably because most attacks still manage to exceed The Guptill Difficult Level for a spell with the new ball - even in conditions not ideal for seam bowling the SL opening bowlers were all over him last time we toured there.

He's probably improved a little with all the work with Crowe, but Australia showed up all the usual problems with hard hands etc.

Not in tests they didn't - Spuderford was still in the side at the time. But I think in general Guptill hasn't been super lucky with the test series he's played. Of his 37 tests, 7 have been against Australia, 5 against South Africa, 5 against Pakistan. Most of his 12 tests against India and Sri Lanka were played in the sub-continent. He hasn't had many modest assignments like SRL or WI in New Zealand.

Still averages near 40 at home doesn't he?

This series:
1st Test: Sri Lanka v New Zealand at Galle, Nov 17-19, 2012 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo
2nd Test: Sri Lanka v New Zealand at Colombo (PSS), Nov 25-29, 2012 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

11, 13, 4 ,11, twice to Kulasekara and twice to Eranga.

Yeah true.

I've got two Tests to choose from and the bowling is completely village in both of them at the moment. Broadcasters should've got their heads together and demanded that either Sri Lanka or the West Indies batted first.

Honestly think internal politics had more to do with his performance than anything else.
Was forced to rest for ODI's by Hess, and was caught inbetween in the Ross vs Hess battle.
no I remember every single one of those dismissals being typical Guptill dismissals.

With Smith departin Kane has a huge chance to go number 1 in world. He is only 10 points behind Root. Provided Warner doesn't score 300, I think a century will be enough to secure top spot.

will only be updated after the test, right? Need to win in second innings too

Lets be honest Smith is unlikely to get a second bat. So even if he ducks in second innings I think a century will be about enough. (based on looking at how his points change after each innings)
