Williamson apparently needs another 465 runs to break the record for the most runs ever made in international cricket in a calendar year. Distinctly possible given that he's got 7 innings to do it.

He looks good to get halfway there this innings tbh, even the edges have looked all part of the plan.

Latham tossing away a start was irritating, but still really a very good first session. For our top order, going from Aus to this must really be on par to going from tests back to domestix.

I get why captains do it but **** I hate seeing bowlers bowl with a deep point.
Especially after winning the toss and deciding to bowl. I didn't watch the whole session but SL so frequently just seem to be going through the motions.

Yeah absolutely. It's why I think it's really important that Guptill cashes in here. I don't have much faith in any of the alternatives to do well on tough overseas tours or even against really good attacks at home so he can probably get away with failing on those as long as he doesn't let it get inside his head too much when he plays the easier attacks. If Guptill can't ton up against Sri Lanka at home across the series then it might be time to say goodbye because I reckon Brownlie could manage that.

Guppy!
Refusal to acknowledge that Jeets is the best NZ spinner still playing the game is straight up denial.

There's no way you can watch any of his spells in county cricket or even NZ domestic and frikken t20 and not conclude that he's a better bowler than the incumbent.
If he's so much better then why can't he take more wickets at a better average than tastle?

Answer - because he's not
Craig is a spud.

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Nah the SLer's averages are a tad misleading. They're more like mid-35 career average bowlers.

No
Real answer - because domestic batsmen have zero ability to pick a toppy from a legspinner, and because flight and drift mean ****-all on surfaces that offer spinners nothing.

well I agree with your sentiment, but flight and drift are everything on surfaces that offer spinners nothing. Of course, a little turn makes it much more dangerous, but if flight and drift are your only weapon then they're your only weapon.

Not Terrible
Craig has averaged about 45 with the ball two years in a row which includes a tour to WI.

He also consistently lets down Southee or Boult by giving super easy runs when they start to build up a spell.

He isnt good enough to attack and he cant defend. Makes him a shunt.

The problem with NZ pitches isn't just the lack of turn though, it's the lack of bounce. Low and consistent bounce means that there's less on offer for bowlers who can generate good flight and dip. That's the biggest reason why NZ is such a spinners graveyard imo.

the Basin can sometimes be ok when it's one of the firmer ones that grips a bit rather than skids. Remember Harbhajan doing pretty well on it a few years ago.

2000 test runs for Gup!

Yes, he's had almost as many innings as Kane has for his 3665, but still.

Crazy thing is when he plays like he has today you wonder how the hell he can average below 30. Such a frustrating player and this coming from a neutral, god knows how he makes you lot feel.

nah from watching this innings you can tell exactly why he averages under 30. An extra yard of pace or a bit more movement and you just know he's boned

nah you mustn't have watched him closely. He has a terminal technique flaw. Plays well in front of his body and pushes forward at any length that's not short. Simply cannot play the ball down at his feet. He will always bully short bowlers that he can just repeatedly plop on the front foot to. Any McGrath style bowler or genuine good length/back of a length bowler will get him out easily. That or a touch of extra pace and he's gone.

If you've been watching him for a while it's very easy to see why he bullies non-Test standard attacks and is completely at sea against decent bowlers.
