I wondered what the point is of saving the game to "only" lose 2-0 in the test series...

But trying to save the game instead of going guns blazing to chase a world record score might be better in the long run, especially for the newer players in the team.

The competitor in me though wishes we would go for it... Maybe just survive the day (which would already be an improvement considering how we played this series) and reasses the situation tomorrow morning.

6 from 113 wtf?

I watched that session in my dear old mum's hospital room - she is recovering from a broken hip, has dementia, is on endone, snored through the whole thing and was still more entertaining than Amla

The blackcaps definitely and possibly Australia would attempt to chase this. England not so much.
In my opinion, you can't see the target in a vacuum. The match circumstances are that SA got bowled out for 120 in the first innings, the pitch has true spin and a bit of uneven bounce and Ashwin and Jadeja have 48 wickets @ 11 in 3 tests between them in the series. I don't think any team, certainly not Australia, would attempt to chase 480 with the above circumstances in mind.

Then DWTA. There are two schools of thought on how to play for a draw. One school of thought is that you do a blockathon. The other school of thought is that if you bat positively you will last longer and have a better chance of saving the game.

Look I am only following this on cricinfo so I have to take you at your word that it is a minefield. All I know is we (blackcaps) have had intentions of chasing every target set in front of us so far, even the absurd ones. Australia are more circumspect than us, but their attitude at least under previous captains has been "meh we are probably going to lose this whether we block or whether we try to score runs so lets go for glory since there is nothing to lose".

The way I play cricket I advocate doing what South Africa is doing. Whenever someone starts batting like an AMLA usually the commentators get into a fuss and bother over it and say it is too slow and how he should be more positive. And that is former test match players saying that. It is a controversial topic and different people see it differently.

My final point is just something about semantics. I said "possibly" Australia. I don't know maybe you are right maybe they wouldn't chase it. Maybe they would who knows. I am not an expert on Australia.

Brendon McCullum would chase 600 if it was offered to him as a 4th inning target.
