Nah, Aussie had better players than Watson, you just didn't pick them for some reason.
The BCs have no-one better than Guptill. No-one is even close at the moment imo.

I would be a no nonsense coach the following is what caught my eye as being unacceptable by my standards from both teams.

Guptill fending one off his chest to Joe Burns. Just duck next time. Or wear it. But man up and deal with that short stuff.
Baz being bowled off a nothing delivery by Marsh - learn to defend. You said you had recently learned the shot now show it. Also get a lighter bat, your bat speed was too slow and you failed to catch up with some deliveries.
Tom Latham getting out playing an attacking shot in the final inning. Either open the batting with Baz or instruct your openers to stone wall. Don't tell your openers mixed messages like - don't give your wicket away but take what is on offer and we will reassess at tea. That is just a recipe for wickets and it led to Kane and Ross yet again having to do a cameo. Get better tactics.
Mark Craig - you are a spinner. How hard is it to be accurate. Extremely hard based on watching you. Not acceptable bowling. And unacceptable batting with Ross. You may have cost him a triple century. Our entire tail seems to have been given the message "express yourself with the bat". Why. Why have they been given this message. Let them play supporting knocks when required. That test match in England where we threw away a draw boggles the mind and there should have been accountability afterwards.

Mitchell Marsh - Learn how a test cricketer constructs an innings. You seem to have very few gears to your batting at the moment.
Nathan Lyon. The spin bowler must be the smartest bowler in the team and you put little effort in on that front.
Joe Burns - no comment. He did his best. I would not be on his case. But would be giving him remedial batting lessons.
Hazelwood - Work harder. Earn wickets. Pull finger.
Neville - stop being a ****. Not every time, but on several occassions when Joe Burns did some screw up at short leg, Neville gave it the old raised eyebrows and get a load of this guy to the captain at second slip. Be loyal. No room for people like that in my team.

Wasn't so much that problem with Watson I was referring to, its more the problem where Watson would contribute just enough at the least critical point of a series or do just enough in dreadful series to keep himself secure.
If the genuine consensus is that there's no one better than Gotpills?/Suckstill then fair enough but Brownlie/Raval are at least worth having a look at during a home series rather than giving a known quantity a chance to pad his stats.
Although I suspect albeit in a bit of ignorance that something must be terribly wrong with Raval's game to warrant scant mentions anywhere for selection.

Disagree. He was a bit patchy in Perth, but I thought we saw enough to persevere.

I think this is a bit much. It's fair enough to say he deserves a longer run given he hasn't be horrible and the lack of particularly exciting alternatives, but Brownlie at the very least qualifies as "close" even if you think Guptill is better.

Australia's policy of just blindly putting the noob at short leg is idiotic. I know it's a radical idea but how about putting your best short leg fielder in that position? Sure, it's a crap place to field, but if you're not prepared to do whatever it takes for your team to succeed then you shouldn't be playing for your country.

There are better short legs (ie Smith) but if they put them there then they'll lose a valuable slipper and they are already running out of good slippers

I remember when Alistair Cook had to field at short leg. Complete mismatch for the position. Some 6 foot 2 bloke who had a tough time bending down - told to go in there because he was the N00b. Good times.
Based on the amount of balls smashed into him at short leg during the game I am of the opinion that the only person suited to the position is some N00b. Burns could have been injured on a number of occassions and you don't want that happening to Warner.

Now that I think about it, Smith needs to accept some criticism. Taylor and Williamson weren't going to pop one up to short leg once they were set. Yet he persisted in having one in there, and at one point Taylor smashed a pull shot into his chest. On another day that could have been a serious accident or even fatal. You wouldn't see me agree to field short leg against a Ross Taylor with his eye in nor would I endanger any of my team mates by putting anyone in there against him. When we do use the position in club cricket it is against players who are afraid of the ball and less competent off the back foot. Once a guy is on 40 we tend to spread the field. A short leg against our openers is a good idea, not so much against our two good batsman.

If you're worried about a player getting injured then don't field anyone there. But if you are going to play a short leg, which is purely a wicket taking fielding position, there's no point putting someone there who's crap at it.
This is another one of those things (like night watchmen) that teams do without any kind of in depth risk/reward analysis.
