It's far from essential though. A genuinely good bowler, in form, who bowls well can take wickets regardless of what type of bowler they are. NZ don't have one of those right now.

Agreed, though Southee and Boult are genuinely good bowlers, but not in form. They can take wickets when conditions aren't favourable (see UAE, Sri Lanka). They're bowling really, really averagely this tour and the next cabs off the rank aren't standing up at all (for all our chest beating about depth, it's only true at home - maybe).

As far as quality goes our own attack is leagues behind basically the same exact players from 12-18 months ago.

Also we do have that one bowler but he's not been picked. I'd take 1 Wagner for both Henry and Bracewell atm.
