Alright pretty sure that stat is actually correct. Can't find any series where a team had more than 6 centuries from the top 3, but there are lots of examples of 6, like 10+. Also some weird things where a batsman scored what would have been the 7th top order century but randomly batted at 4 or something.

Most runs in a day's Test play in Australia (for any side) Warner 232*, Clarke 224 v SA Adelaide 2012, 223 Bradman v WI Brisbane 1931

Worth noting that the 224 came off basically two sessions, though.
Two a half tbf.

I tried to do a statsguru and found HowSTAT! Test Cricket - Matthew Hayden - Progressive Batting

which had 7 tons by the top 3 through the series
