Think Skippy is going to have to look for yet another profession. Not the best behind the mic and not much rapport with the other guys.
be interested to see how decent cricketers who don't make it in coaching/commentary gigs generally do in life

Awesome game for me to get first up!

WASP had CD at 7% at one point. Clarkson WAG.
Great innings, with the caveat that he was absolutely dead plumb on 20 odd. Still, pretty bloody impressive for an 18 year old. Very, very mature.

That last no ball call too  wasn't even close to being one (not that it affected the result)

Are there free hits in this competition for front foot no balls? Because Clarkson certainly didn't treat that last ball as one. Makes me think the no ball might have been for field restriction violations or something like that.

I'm trying to think of guys who have come in at 18, fared well straight away and not gone on to play for NZ. I guess Boam might be one, but he probably would be in there now if he was still playing. Phillips debuted for Auckland last year & no doubt will re-emerge. The last bunch of guys I can think of who came in & did well at 18 were Williamson, Southee & Anderson. Ryder also had an excellent season opening with Spearman.

Jarrod Englefield made a pretty good entry at about 19, he was from down Clarkson's way. It's weird how it was Phillips dominating our CW talk during the A and U19 tourneys and Clarkson was just one of the pack.

Anderson was 16 from memory, when he first was contracted in Canterbury.

I know he doesn't count because he has played for NZ, but Rob Nicol scored a ton for Auckland in the Shield at 18 and didn't play for NZ until he was 29.

Carl Cachopa scored some Ramprakashesque slow, mature but ultimately only 20s as an 18 year old for Auckland.

Actually, that probably reinforced the original point.

There was an 18 year old L A spinner for CD only a few years ago who did well. I'm thinking 3-fers or 4-fers only though. Never heard from him since?
Wightman.

Interesting, sounds like he did reasonably well but has fallen behind Ajaz Patel in the pecking order.

A member of New Zealand's 30-man training squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup last year, he has already represented Central Districts in two first-class matches.

He had previously starred for CD at under-17 and under-18 level, topping the CD wicket charts with 12 wickets (at 27.58) during the national under-18 tournament in 2010-11.

Wightman marked his first-class debut against Otago in February last year by taking 0-47, followed by 3-9 in the second innings including the wickets of Black Caps Neil Broom, Jimmy Neesham and Neil Wagner.

He then backed up with the economical figures of 0-21 and 1-45 against Auckland, including the wicket of recently selected New Zealand T20 player Colin Munro.

Wightman has yet to feature for the Stags this season due to leg-spinner Tarun Nethula's domestic availability after he was dropped from the Black Caps. The selection of Indian-born left- arm spinner Ajaz Patel has been another unexpected obstacle.

I wonder if the Weaver who played in that game is related to Gazza.
A cricketer since his dad Shane enrolled him in the Milo ‘Have a Go' programme as a Witherlea School youngster, Nick has always been tall for his age and bowling fast came naturally. He hurried up his fair share of opposition batsmen in those early years with the Wairau club.

However, as fast as he was, Nick was equally as wayward and never made the Marlborough primary schools rep team. With a bit of help he eventually began to harness his natural speed, making the Marlborough under-15 side and getting a couple of games at senior club level in the 2010-11 season.

Yep that's another one, I think Carl did slightly more than that in his first year too and cracked a side that was basically full of NZ reps. In fact all brothers debuted before 20 I'd say, and none of them are looking likely to ever play for NZ.

His spin was more nude than perhaps even Lance Dry's, Wightman.

I should really get a video of Dry in action before he retires btw, for the A-Z compilation. I'll have to keep an eye on Easts' schedule, if Ch00baka doesn't have one already.

The Wuzids struggling with the dimensions of their big new ground again. Hopefully Nicholls might get out here and today is McConchie's day.
