If I was selecting a team based on what they have shown recently

Warner
Cowan
Klinger
Smith
Voges
Henriques
Wade
Johnson
Starc
Hastings
Lyon

Big difference

Why is that re Cowan and Bird?
I get the feeling that Cowan doesn't fit with Lehmann's #intent selection philosophy, and his treatment in the 2013 Ashes didn't exactly make it look like Lehmann was a fan (+ that dismissal will probably always count against him in Boof's eyes). Bird, on the other hand, is also lacking the #intent by not bowling at 140km/h plus that Lehmann set as the minimum requirement for his fast bowlers.

plus Bird didn't do well in England, both on the 2013 ashes tour but also the A tour the year before. such #failures will surely be put down to #intent. and when you've got cummins, pattinson etc....

I want to make a Kippax-style post about Starc being the epitome of the Lehmann selection philosophy (format doesn't matter, #intent doesn't end with the colour of a ball), with some reference to Warne's 'get angry' speech thing, but I'm not nearly clever enough to do it.

So just assume I made one and respond as such.

Except for "papers stamped" Cowan pretty much the side I'd like. Wonder if "papers stamped" Siddle will get in ahead of "papers should be stamped" Haze.

i like burns but from what i've seen bancroft looks much more likely to succeed as a test opener. would definitely take burns in the middle order though

"He's a good young player, he's as tough as nails, and we all think he has got what it takes to play Test cricket," Marsh said. "But we think he's a few runs shy at the moment; he's a few hundreds shy. And we'd like to pick him when he's in sparkling form and getting first-class hundreds, that is when we'd really like to pick a young player.
god this is stupid. also remember when steve smith did like the opposite of that and got picked for india and it's probably the best decision ever

Probably, but Burns has his own issues and I dare say is hardly any better. I'd imagine the selectors are aware of that.

I can believe they don't want to experiment against the Black Caps.

Sometimes I do wonder why Bancroft Burns Khawaja Marsh are the chosen ones at the moment ahead of say Cowan Maddinson Ferguson Handscomb

I bet that no one (who wants Australia to win) would pick all of the first 4 bats in the frame ahead of the 4 others who aren't.
The first point is so valid.

If you ask different people, there would have been so many differing selections for these 2 spots.

No one is really sticking their hands up.

Burns' & Khawaja's spots could easily have gone to Bancroft, Cowan, S.Marsh, Klinger, Handscomb, Maddinson, Ferguson etc and there probably wouldn't be much difference in performance?

The no-one is sticking their hands up is a harsh call in some ways. The season has only just started - Cowan, Klinger, Handscomb all scored centuries in the First match and Ferguson almost did. Bancroft, Marsh and Maddinson all performed well in the Matador, so they've all done something that Khawaja hasn't done unless you count his tour match ton as being very significant.

The never played a Test for Australia XI

1. C. Bancroft
2. M. Stoinis
3. M. Klinger
4. N. Maddinson
5. C. Ferguson
6. P. Handscomb
7. S. Whiteman
8. B. Cutting
9. G. Sandhu (will have to bowl some spin)
10. J Behrendorff
11. A. Fekete

injured players like Lynn and Sayers were overlooked.

I'm not just talking recent times. I'm talking over a period of time. None of them average well into the 40's in FC cricket? I may be wrong ? None of them have really said I am well better than FC cricket and I am ready to take test cricket on by the horns with really dominant performances over a period of time.

Big thing in Khawaja's favour and why they're backing him I reckon is that he knows how to score tons. When he's out of touch, there fewer runs in between the hundreds but, given a good start or a bit of luck, he'll kick on. The same cannot be said about any of the other guys other than Cowan.

Hey I've been meaning to do this for a while, but I think your post is a perfect reason to post some stats. I have decided to include the past 3 full seasons of Sheffield Shield Cricket and the first round of this year. I've just chosen that period as it is quite a significant amount of time and not to push a particular player or anything.

When you look at the list below, I guess you are quite right with your post although there are some standouts, You also have to take into consideration that we've had a whole change to our batting lineup and the likes of Voges, Smith and Rogers DID actually say they are too good for First Class Cricket and demanded selection - I hope you and others find this quite interesting:

Since the start of 2012-2013 Sheffield Season stats

Current Australian top 7

What's Moz's bowliing figures as a comparison to MMarsh?

48 with 4 tons including a Shield final winning ton is the sort of stuff you would kill to see you no.6 batting allrounder produce.

Henriques 22 wickets @ 27

Just looked at Forkers:

Faulkner 50 wickets @ 24.64

So Moz's numbers are even better than I thought they were. ****'s only 28 too. Really hope he can pile on some runs in the next few Shield matches in case MMarsh doesn't fire. It would suck if he was out of form if an opportunity arose.
