Were you one of the peeps telling me to chill the **** out 5 years ago when I was saying Smith was clearly our best young middle order option and almost everyone else was writing him off as a leggie who couldn't bowl? Can't quite remember...

Ad00b is making very valid points regarding Smudge and i agree with his smudge comparison to early 00 ponting but the thing is early 00 p00ntang had mwaugh,swaugh,marto,clarkeh etc so while he was the best bat in the team and the guy who is likely to make the most important contribution to the team more consistently than others but it wasn't **** or drown situation where Aust gets ****ed if Ponting fails there are several others who would step up.
not the case now.If Aust had Martyn and 2012 Clarke batting at 4 and 5 respectively i'd put Smith at 3 in a beat but with the fragile line up Usman grinding out 10 overs of new ball could make smith's job so much easier.

If Smith bats 3 then it's easier to fit Maxwell in the team. That's reason enough for me.

I'm really surprised people have such strong feelings about it, tbh. I don't think it's going to matter much either way. Whether I batted Smith at three or four would depend pretty much entirely on who else I wanted to pick and where I thought they were best suited. I've got Smith at three in my team but if I wanted Khawaja, Bancroft or Cowan instead of Marsh or Voges I'd have him at four instead.
