Who would we pick in the place of Rahane? Rayudu is no better, Kedar Jadhav and Uthappa could bat 6/7, but not at 4. Pujara might do slightly better, but he lacks a 4th gear too, and then there are the unproven young 'uns like Pandey, Iyer, Gurkeerat, etc.

Rahane is still comfortably one of the top 6 batsmen in India. He deserves a spot in the ODI side, He didn't play that awful an innings today. He supported Rohit, he set a platform, and he just got out when he was looking to push on. That happens. There are 4 other batsmen in that top 6 who didn't contribute. If you've only got two batsmen crossing 31 you aren't going to win many runchases.

Figuring out a number 7 is a more pressing issue, especially since MSD can't seem to find that top gear anymore. We need to either find a legit batsman who can contribute with the ball too, or get the part-timers working on their bowling and stick another big-hitting batsman in there. Axar/Binny aren't going to cut it.
Until the time I start my FC career and become AB v2.0, IMO we should bump Dhoni up a spot and play someone like Uthappa below him. Uthappa can also function as reserve keeper with games under his belt in case Dhoni completely loses it by 2019.

Stating facts you don't like = terrible poster?
Not wanting to find peer-reviewed evidence of my posts on a cricket forum = terrible poster?

lmao how many references do you want people to attach to their posts?

How seriously do you expect people to take this? Honestly one of the most pathetic things I've seen.
I think most people here on CW take cricket very seriously..it might seem odd to you, you can even laugh about it, but yeah CW is not going to stop taking cricket seriously though.

ftr regardless of my thinking that his innings could've been better, I wouldn't drop Rahane. The game was still completely in our control when he got out. Lower middle order deserve a higher portion of the blame. .

Urgh such a terrible post. Go missing for the whole match, only pop up once India loses to push you anti-Rahane agenda with ****ty stats and no context/real analysis.
I'm supposed to post throughout the match? That Rahane is overrated in ODIs is no agenda - it's just obvious.

No you're supposed to either not post drivel or **** off. But since neither of those are happening, it would be good if you could post throughout the game and offer more insights with regards to what is actually happening, rather than meaningless numbers and false conclusions drawn off those numbers.

And why the **** are all these random Saffer posters making posts about the SA team here in the Indian ODI lineup discussion thread?!?!

No one took anything seriously ffs. I asked him to name an example and then he didn't. Fine he doesn't have to but he totally just flipped out after it.

Yeah it's high time more people started using the intermediate value theorem in cricket stats

He got halfway there to losing it today tbh, seemed far too content prodding his way there for a last over/last ball finish almost like he presumed no variables would pop up.

I'd dare say that sort of approach in the finale of that match situation is far worse than Rahane came close to doing.

Saffers played well, first and foremost. But I think from India's point of view, a combination of horrendous death bowling, injury to Ashwin and a poorly timed chase in the last 13 overs cost the match. No one single thing.

Yeah Rahane's innings was most definitely not fine. When your SR is 75 odd in a 300 chase, you either make sure you stay there till the end and get the team home or go 7th gear and score your last 20 runs in 10 balls and go back to the dressing room.
But if we divide the game situation, Rahane's innings sits good. India needed like 114 from 98 when Rahane got out with 8 wickets (Kohli, Dhoni, Raina to come and Rohit was at the crease). Think the blame should go to the middle order. Sure we can say Rahane should have scored at more faster rate, should have stayed at the end etc but really the middle order should have sealed the game. Rahane was fine imo.

I think he was saying that he can't be bothered looking up archives because he doesn't take cricket very seriously. Fair point. We do so I was just pointing out the kind of conversation that is usually expected on CW.

Wasn't he hurt?

Agree he doesn't seem to have the hitting ability he used to have though.

Literally no one asked anyone to look up archives. You can just talk about something you remember, it happens all the time here.

I have to say that the biggest culprit in this chase was my favourite batsman today - Kohli.

When you're the best batsman in the side, and you come in at 2 wickets down with about 100 to go, he should have steered them to victory along with Rohit.
This is very similar to the innings Dravid played in the 03 game in Centurion after Tendulkar got out.

Rahane is getting a lot of hate, but when he got out, the game was very much in India's hands.
