This whole "cake" vs "icing" debate has tended to ignore that a lot of players can play both roles well

Bailey's had his share of smashing quick 50s, and an hour or 2 ago Dan was saying Wade should bat higher because he's cake, and now he's just come in and smashed a 26 ball 50

Clipping leg probably, very full so fair enough i think. Hales could be odd man out with Root returning.

Plumb as really. Cummins is special isn't he?

That second one I think was out too.

EDIT: hit higher than I thought.

Wouldn't surprise me; he's been dire all series. It's the same old juggle between giving a guy a decent run in the side and recognising when he isn't up to it.
My worry with Hales is that he doesn't even score at much of a lick when he does stick around. Just doesn't look good enough tbh.

I know most aren't fans of Roy on here but he has looked excellent at times and much better than Hales who has now got 3 notable scores in 19 games.

I know Cummins got a wicket with a fully but his stock is banging it in and he shouldn't forget why

Yeah I still think Roy looks a bit crap, but the notable thing is that he does actually look better at this level with every game he plays. He's certainly earned a run to prove me wrong. Hales on the other hand seems to be getting inside his own head and going backwards so I don't think continuing to select him is doing him any favours.

Neither of 'em are any good.

Open with Vince and Moeen in ODIs; its a nice balance of taking advantage early and setting a platform at a decent clip.

Roy looks like the kind of player who is never in because he has a stupid shot in his locker out if nowhere. Reckon he can be a serviceable opener for a bit though.
Hales looks like he is trying to be a Test player before he is an ODI player. Very strange.

Yeah look I don't really believe in Roy as such either but I think he's earned a run to prove me (and especially you  ) wrong given he looks more comfortable every game. As Marcuss said the other day, he certainly wouldn't be the first opener I'd drop right now. I actually still think their best (or second best) ODI opener is Cook, but playing lots of ODIs isn't great for his Test game and it probably wouldn't be a great fit for the cake-icing balance of this side either. I'd roll with Mooen+Roy for a little while.

Yeah, I'm fine for him to get a decent run in the side; he hasn't been lolbad as an opener. But I just cannot see him making it long-term -- or even if he does, he's never quite going to be good enough to make meaningful contributions when it matters most. He might even come out with nice-looking stats, like an English Aaron Finch.
