And it's not even a bad shout - he got some really good batsmen out and 8/15 are ridiculous figures.

Just one of those things lol.

Yeah, there's not much to argue against it. Even when viriya ranked it high, I did defend it saying that statistically, it was phenomenal. Anyone who's seen it knows it was great but miles off from being the greatest spell in the history of cricket. But no statistical method, no matter how deep will capture that.

Batsmen being daft is what creates great spells though. Or at least it gives you the numbers for the wickets column which is what anyone looks at first by default when talking about great bowling spells. Otherwise, even in my time of watching cricket the two greatest fast bowling spells have to McGrath to Lara at Barbados in 1999 (he did get a fifer I think) and then that Steyn masterclass to Sachin in 2010.

No Pollock, No Donald says how amazing and consistent they were in their career which lasted for more than 10 years.

I see Spofforth comes out at 36 in your list DoG for his 7/44 in the second innings 1882. Is he scored lower for a low scoring match? He only had 85 runs to defend against and bowled 28 (4ball) overs unchanged
Also, do career averages of the batsmen go into your formula or is it how the ICC ratings score players at the time?

I have no idea how your formula worked out that Bhajji's 5-fer at Mumbai in 2004 was his best ever bowling effort. It was not even the best bowling effort in that inning. His efforts in Chennai in 2001 in the first innings esp. were out of this world good... And yet, that is ranked lower?
