*Official* Fourth Test at Trent Bridge

Mark Wood really doesn't look like much chop. I said the same during the NZ series but nothing about him, bar some decent pace, screams test bowler.

Happy to see Stokes do well last night mind you, I hope the Australian management took note because why Mitch Marsh was dropped I have no idea. Yeah he hasn't been good with the bat this series but you have to give him a chance and two tests isn't that.

Wood bowled some pretty dangerous stuff, has had some great spells in test cricket so far but lacks consistency. Don't think we can play him and Finn but having both gives us two reasonable wicket taking 3rd seamers. Holding option we lack, hope Stokes can develop that side of his game.

mark wood is proper gash though.

MUH AGGRESSION
MUH AESTHETIC ACTION
Anyone else see him as a slightly poor man's Simon Jones? Not intending to bash him, I like him as a bowler. But he's got the aggro, slightly similar actions, even that 5 o clock shadow sort of lady slayer look.

It didn't really matter because we had our opening bowlers at the crease, which is probably the only reason you should declare in the first innings

Agree that praising it for being 'aggressive' is pretty worthless.
That's what it was about right, the fact it was a pretty well new ball that was as likely to injure either guy or dismiss them as it was to yield any meaningful runs?

It's laughable how bad Australia are at playing the moving ball. Gone are the days that their FC system was a definitive proving ground in terms of producing batsmen.

I think it's pretty clear why Australia are losing this Ashes. It is because they won 5-0 last time. Whenever they win 5-0, by default the lose the following Ashes. No point blaming anyone else.

Just watching the highlights, and a lot of potential wickets off no balls. Does anyone know if the umpires failed to call any more no balls during the Australian innings? Just wondering if this is another example of bowlers not being able to correct overstepping because the umpires haven't been calling them off balls that didn't take wickets. Apologies if this has already been asked/covered.
I'm sure the umpires gave the bowlers plenty of warnings about how close they were getting, so I don't have much sympathy for them. Having said that, I think at this point the responsibility for calling no-balls should just be handed over to the 3rd umpire. Would allow the on-field umpires to focus on more important things, and would also help to avoid situations like the one you mentioned.

1920/21?

There's only one other circumstance in history to back up your argument.....

I'm not sure it's right that the umpires aren't looking for noballs, they are just giving the benefit of doubt to the bowler. They are obviously watching the line because they aren't calling for noball reviews on every wicket, just the close ones. Where there's daylight between foot and the line they are still calling noballs as they occur.

My personal bugbear is how many times backfoot noballs are missed (and that isn't a job that the third umpire can do)

As a bowler, the real warning that you're close to overstepping the line is getting ****ing called for no ball when you overstep.

But yes, totally agree with your second point - a way to automate this is now a necessity.

Yup, in a few years we'll look back and laugh at the fact umpires were still adjudging no-balls in televised matches in 2015.

Usually I make a point of reading through the whole match thread for Aus games I miss, win or lose. Just can't do it. This ****house team has broken me. **** them.

definition wahhh
you'd know

Not at the moment? The ability to call front foot noballs is a by-product of the run out cameras. There are no cameras set up to specifically watch the return crease.
You can usually just see it anyway from the main angle. Regardelss though it's a very easy problem to solve if you decided to turn it over to some third party though.

Odd, if true it sounds like he was pushed before he inevitably would have jumped anyway.
