It makes you wonder. I'm always one for judging how good a team is based on results but you clearly can't just excise 3 world class batsmen and think they're just as good because they haven't lost enough yet.

SA might win this test, obvious disclaimer. I'm not saying they're no longer a good team.

South Africa's batting lineup has really lost something, from the dominant side that won in England and Australia in 2012. Still have world class players in there but they're back into the pack, on paper at least.

I mean, they've lost Smith and Kallis, it's not exactly hard to figure out what they've lost, but you get what I mean
Yeah, SA seems to have lost that X-Factor. A year ago I would have said we will annihilate England at home, but now I think we're in for a tight series at the end of the year, and England will think they're in with at least an even chance of taking it.

Bangladesh need to bat out these next 2 days. If the Pitch deteriorates ... Mustafzur's leg breaks are going to be close un-playable.

Y'know, mustafizer might be finally realising something that I've always been fascinated, which is about how Bill O'Reilly is often described as spinner who bowls at medium pace, and wondering if it can work in the modern era. Though I've always wondered if they meant at speeds which mustafizer is bowling at or just anil kumble

O'Reilly was more Chandrasekhar than Mustafizur

HE IS NOT A SPINNER

Joke might be funny if Bangladesh hadn't been crying out for a decent test seamer for 15 years.

Sidney Barnes to be precise

That's pretty sharp, especially with movement. Steyn routinely bowls spells at around that in helpful conditions.

I thought he was about 5k below that on average.
he was bowling around 132k during india series. not sure what clicked, he started bowling 5k faster in sa series

How fast did Mustafzur bowl today on average?
"On average" is never going to tell you all that much because his pace varies so much. The spinner jokes stem from the amount of cutters he bowls and not the pace of his stock ball, which is usually high 130s. He actually didn't bowl many cutters today compared to what we saw in the ODIs, and his three wicket over was actually an entire over of full pace reverse swing.

Cricinfo says he averaged 83.9mph through the day which is about 135km/hr, and that included several balls down below 80 which were deliberate cutters. He peaked at 88.7mph -- he can certainly bowl quickly when he wants to.

Do you approve of him, Cribbage?
Yeah definitely. I think teams will start preparing better for his cutter antics and work out a way to pick them better, but he's going to be massive in the subcontinent, particularly in ODIs. Realistically, even if Bangladesh produced a pace bowler who could average 35 in Test cricket that'd be huge for them, and I'd be pretty surprised if he couldn't manage that. Spinner jokes aside, he reminds me a lot of Vaas.

Is it natural for you to switch to mph, cribbage?

Still think in imperial for cricket even though I know the proportions pretty well. It's like being told how much things cost in another currency, you just don't have the mental yardsticks without 'translating' it first.

Yeah I'm pretty much cool with either/both but that's probably not really normal for an Australian my age; it's only become natural because I've watched so much English cricket I think.

I am mostly half-joking too, but c'mon, ODI mode he's pretty much half-spinner. I semi-seriously consider faulkner to be our actual ODI spinner too.

It's a thing that's always fascinated me. What if players like them pretty much decide to use their cutters as the stock ball?

Remember that ball Johnson bowled to pujara? I really want someone to make a career out of bowling that as a stock ball.

Was just gonna post that he reminded me of Vaas in his later years when he had a great off-cutter after watching his 3 wickets in 4 balls.. That's a great comparison for a newbie. If he does as well as Vaas over a long-term that would win Ban a lot of matches.
