I could have sworn you were the one defending Ballance in the first test?
I was there too tbf. Just with qualifiers.

And only because the criticism gets ridiculous at times. I don't mean to deny his glaring weaknesses, but he's not exactly Chris Martin. He does some things well too.

Some good bowling by Australia and some mentally tired batsmen in that session. Sets up tomorrow. Fresh batsmen and an older ball so the main enemy will be scoreboard pressure and impatience.

Around pages 85-92 of this thread were great reading when I woke up. Lyth, Gary, Bell and Joe and insert so many expletives. I'm very happy to see

Isn't that still of Johnson a backfoot no-ball?
They just showed the full replay. He landed his back foot about a foot inside the crease and then does this weird as **** kick out behind him. Legitimate, but no idea how/why he does that.

Can't comment saw none of it live. Dismissals don't look good on tv but didn't see what was happening around them so hard to say anything really.

We are stuffed.

Move on to Edgbaston, nothing to see here.

Maybe wait a tiny bit longer to make a judgement. Like for instance when he's batted more than once and kept for more than one session.
No need. He's always been a better gloveman and has had a much more consistent batting record at fc level than Haddin. The only question really was if he could make the step up. Now maybe he'll fall apart but nothing shown so far in his fc career or now his first day in the middle on the biggest stage in test cricket have shown there's much likelihood of that.

Rad is 37 nigh on 38 and clearly not the player he was even 18mths ago. It will only be sentimentality that gets him the position back, and I don't think much of sentimentality as a selection criterion.

Just came here to say well played to the Crims, Smith and Rogers in particular. I hope we can make a game of this despite being utterly thrashed for the first two days.

pfft, devil's advocate stuff in an Ashes thread.

Johnson still isn't quite at full pace yet IMO but that looked ****ing rapid nonetheless
Tbf he's only really hit that absolute top speed in the last Ashes and the Centurion game AFAIK. Rest of the time he's just fast, rather than averaging 12 because no one can deal with the sheer pace, pace.

What was Starc's bowling like ?
Was he on line and length.

Are the Aussie bowlers pitching it up more this game ?
Didn't watch the last hour where Cook and Stokes consolidated, but before drinks yes we were pitching it up. Starc seemed a bit patchy, especially against Ballance.

Slightly worried about the Cook/Stokes partnership. Obviously 4 wickets in a session is good but it does feel a bit like the Lord's Test earlier this year (difference is that we're batting first so for England to win they need to chase down 500 probably...or us to enforce the follow-on).

yes the last partnership has got me worried, Cook and Stokes compliment each other well, Stokes with counterattacking aggression and Cook with the pragmatic defense. We need to get them out quickly. With the depth of batting England have I'm not writing them out yet. Hopefully, overcast conditions and the pitch itself help us tomorrow.

Watching the higlights; man the ass-slap by Clarke to Nevill

It's not artificial though is it? It's high because he got high scores. It's falling now he's getting lower scores. It's not like the high scores now don't count while he's having a tough patch
It is almost artificial, because he's a different batsman to what he was a year ago.

was Australia bowling too short a thing from last game? I just thought they were too wild. Starc is bowling to Cook the same as he did last test for example, full, but swaying onto the pads a bit.
