Mohammed Amir cleared to return with immediate effect

Shoplifting isn't the same as embezzlement or grand theft auto even though they come under the same banner.

Add to that the people pressuring Amir were the same who had the power to make or break his career in the one thing he was good at. And this is in a country where if a influential few put a mark against your name, you are done. Not just in cricket. In everything.

And he had no money or support system to fall back on if this career didn't pan out.

Hardly the same as Vincent and not worth a lifetime ban.

You guys are all missing the point a ridiculous amount. No one says Amir's 5 year ban isn't severe. We're saying it isn't severe enough. Most people who are for the Amir life ban believe that anyone found guilty of any level of match/spot fixing should be given a life ban. Doesn't matter if it's a no-ball or a spree of setups like Cronje and Vincent. Life ban for any guilty party involved in any sort of fixing.

Where do you stand on the Warne-Waugh "John The Bookmaker" affair?

a part of me wishes he was subjected to a pakistan v nz world cup semi at eden park.

the crowd would be punishment enough.

you don't see lou vincent, the bloke with depression and threats and manipulation from a former team mate, escaping a life ban. but amir is soooooooo talented and young and a widdle delicate vase.
Vincent has already had his career. Fair would be if Amir is given a permanent ban, then Lou et al are made to pay back all they have earned from cricket plus have their records erased.

How is it. Why should they then keep all the money just because they did not get caught and decided to admit it after their careers are over.

He could have been given a life ban but wasn't - that is because those charged with the task of sitting in judgment on him didn't believe it was warranted - sporting bodies are rightly like states and have a separate legislature, executive and judiciary and you doubtless get the same tensions that lead to our Parliament trying desperately hard to clip the wings of Judges by introducing the nonsense that is fixed sentences - that idea is anathema to me and fair play to the ICC for recognising the doctrine of separation of powers as being vitally important - if you mix the roles up you get the awful prospect of the judiciary being controlled by public opinion and this thread amply demonstrates why that should never be allowed to happen

I was with you til you said cbf. It was still bad. Should have missed matches.
"Cbf" with respect to the debate at hand. Obviously I think they got off easy, but I just think it has no merit being compared with the Amir situation. It's not fixing.

OverratedSanity cbf debating Mark Waugh, but can be ****ed debating 100s not counting as 50s.

We just need to hope Amir sucks balls at cricket and never really makes it back.

Pakistan have enough good fast bowlers anyway. Move on ****s ffs.

No, I totally get that that's your position, I just fundamentally disagree with it.

I'm happy to see him back, 5 years seems enough. Understand the counter-arguments, but in the end spot-fixing is pretty low on the scale to me.

Hope he's as ***y as he was with the ball before.
