Discuss. Not too sure on England's balance, last minute replacement of Stuart Broad for Thorpe and bumped messrs Flintoff, Botham, Russell and Emburey up one in the order. Need a 5 man attack really, 4 man attack doesn't look potent enough.

Dat Australian middle order though. **** me.

Not really sure how to balance the Eng XI. Fraser performed better than Gough and others in Ashes tests. Not convinced that there is enough bowling there but there really aren't many standout bowlers deserving of a spot.

Just going to use this thread for my own ends. Cricinfo currently have Ricky Ponting selecting his 'Contemporary Ashes XI', and of course there's a poll so you too can select your Contemporary Ashes XI!

Anyway, for both openers options (Ponting chose Hayden and Cook) the line up included Atherton, Cook, Strauss, Trescothick, Vaughan, Hayden, Katich, Watson, Taylor...but no Michael Slater! Despite the fact Slater has scored more Ashes centuries than any of those players.

I don't care if Cook averages 4 the rest of the time, he gets in for 10-11. Especially given that Vaughan's stats are built on one similar such series where he wasn't as good, and one where - from a batting only pov - he was pretty average most of the time anyway

Australia's bowling in that series was poop though

Definitely would have Gus Fraser shading Goughy. Goughy is gold, but Gus gave us more problems. What are Jimmy's numbers like?

If you can pick players from certain points of their careers instead of their overall performances, you got to have MJ from the last one.

not sure if serious.

vaughan was belting mcgrath, warne and gillespie.

cook was belting hilfenhorse, siddle and an epicly bad mitch.

At the start of that series, Oz were felt to have a good attack. They backed it up first time round. Perth aside, the bowling deteriorated the longer Cook batted.

CBF to look up the stats but he must have scored about 200 runs more than Vaughan did. Hard to recall any modern batsman scoring that many in a five Test series.

Smith scored as much in four. Nah the bowling apart from Harris and WACA MJ was ****. Hilf was impersonating a bowling machine, Siddle ball after ball short **** and MJ all over the place

Gooch took 15 years to recover from his first test pair. Actually did he make zero in his 3rd innings as well?
And it wasn't only against Alderman, either.

Not convinced by Emburey ahead of Swann, whatever the stats say. Cashing against their Packerless XI in 1978/9 and the shambles that was Aus in the mid1980s doesn't swing it for me. Nor should Swann be judged by his 2013/14 figures when he was obviously in no fit state.

Stuart Broad's a bit lucky to be there. Willis a bit unlucky not to be.

It's an Ashes 11 ffs...his record against Australia is literally the only thing that matters.
I know it's an Ashes XI, that's why I mentioned his record against Australia. A record which is overall moderate but good enough for the second half of his career to merit his inclusion. If anyone would prefer Chris Broad based on one series against poor opposition that's their tickle.
