Cricket is like ski jumping for me. I give out points for style and effectiveness. Scoring a 40 by pilfering half of them against blokes who have been in the field for 110 overs before you walked out to bat impresses me less than a Michael Clarke innings of 40 with screaming on drives.
I'm glad you still hate Greg Mathews. :) As long as some of us still carry that hate within us, it's like the past is not dead. I hope new generations of Kiwi's will learn to hate Aussie villains the way we did. Hopefully Warner will do something dastardly to us on the November tour, and the flames of hate will burn brightly once again.

Surely if you're rating effectiveness then blokes who manufacture runs should score highly?

I remember the Springbok tour. Us kids at school were incredibly diplomatic about it. Being all of 7 years old of course we didn't have our own opinions and just went along with what ever the family view was. Yet in the playground it was quickly identified whether you were from a pro or anti family yet it stopped there, no discussion or debate just respect from 7 year olds that the country was divided and we weren't going to agree with each other about. I was from an "Anti" family and was taken on a protest walk at age 7 where the pro people lined the streets and made sarcastic comments at us. It was a time to tie your colours to the mast yet at the same time be a good sort about it to the other side.

Possibly that is one of the more defining times of our nation.
I will just add to this post by saying that when I grew up I lived in the tron. It was Hamilton where the activists broke through on to rugby park. Every time I see footage of it, the hair stands up on my arms. The absolute courage and conviction of the protestors was immense. I would like to think I would be one of them today if a similar situation arose. 90% of them got the tar beaten out of them by livid fans once the police let them out of the police station. Hordes of drunk rugby fans just waited outside the station waiting for each protestor to be released. Would follow them for 5 minutes and then take them into an ally. I don't know if 90% is accurate but I have heard a decent percentage were given payback. But sometimes a broken nose is worth it.

Just not as highly as peeps who do score them elegantly. And I give our negative style points if you are particularly ungainly. E.g Colin Munro in tests.

I hated Greg Mathews at the time like any other 12 year old kiwi fan, but was turned when he spent about 10 or 15 minutes chatting to my family after Hadlee's benefit match at Seddon Park in 1990.

I grew up on a dairy farm in the 80's, so fair to say my experience was quite a bit different from yours.
But it is difficult to overstate the deep division between both sides, and the scenes of conflict, the clashes, white motorcycle helmets and blue police helmets, batons and riot shields, fences yielding under the crush of bodies. Now you might see glimpses of old footage on TV from time to time...back then it was like living through a war.

I went to that match. Mum took me and my brother.

Agreed he is probably a nice person - it is just fun to hate an Australian villain.

I also used to hate Craig McDermott for the verbal assaults he would unleash on John Wright for having the temerity to leave the ball alone outside off stump.
Then one day my club hosted him (2 years ago) and I went to a barbeque where he was present. Smashing bloke. Very humble and likeable. Had us eating out of the palm of his hand.

He defused all animosity with his opening line "Hi I'm Craig and I am the guy who used to give your blokes an earful".

I think Bairstow is better than Buttler in both keeping and batting. I've just had a closer look at Buttler's stats. Buttler is somewhat overrated for now. His average of 52 in test cricket is only after a handful of matches, aided, in part, by three not outs. This could come down pretty dramatically if he has couple of bad tests in the next three or four games. His FC average is 34, most of which was at Taunton, considered a batting surface more than it is bowler-friendly. Most test average mirrors FC average (it's rarely 20 point difference). His ODI average after 59 games is 34 and his T20I average is 21 after 37 games. I can't believe how Bairstow won't be able to do significantly better. I think Bairstow is one of the best bats (never mind wicket keeper) in the country and I think these two shouldn't be competing for the same place. Buttler is currently keeping out a genuine batsman.

Please convince the English selectors of this. From an oppositions POV, I'd love the prospect of not having to see Buttler, guy scares the crap out of me.

JB has played 14 tests and averaged 26.

26.

Whilst also having a complete inability to play the straight ball.

Stats are not everything but if you can't see that Buttler is currently the better player I can't help you.
