Any non sub-continental side would go to the sub-continent and start toss-up at best - Australia being the possible exception, given Lyon and the ability to play spin well. And vice versa.
True.

Maybe South Africa might start as favs due to their beast away form, but that is it really.

wha... have you seen our record in the subcontinent in the last few years? almost every single other non-subcontinental test nation has done better than us.

Yeah and Lyon is pretty awful in the SC. Hasn't been able to adjust his lengths to succeed on those pitches. He bowls his usual Australian length on UAE/India pitches and gets milked easily.

So good last year and awful for the few seasons before that.

Really any half decent leg spinner dominates in county cricket, Rashid has never done that.

Current side v current Indian side. But yeah quite possibly right that they'd be a toss-up too. Which was my point, that being expected to win in India shouldn't be a pre-requisite to being ranked as one of the world's pre-eminent sides.

Whatever it takes!!!
On the subject of Ali and the specialist Vs non-specialist spinner argument... The biggest thing is does Ali play as a proper first choice spinner for his FC side? If he does not and plays as a batting all rounder, a la Kallis, then he will be hard pressed to play that role all of a sudden in international cricket, especially on tracks where he is expected to do the bulk of the bowling. To me, Ali got a lot of wickets simply by bowling decently at batsmen intent on coming hard at him due to the pressure applied from the other 4 seamers back during the India series. If he really is the best spinner England have got, then what should happen is that he should be treated as one, both by his FC side and by England. That means batting him at 8 probably and having him spend the bulk of his practice hours bowling. And I can tell you from experience that there have been any number of allrounders even at club level who totally lose what makes them tick when they start playing either as a specialist bowler or a specialist batsman... There are folks for whom the mental freedom of playing as an allrounder is as important as any other ingredient that makes them tick. I just hope for England's sake Moeen is not one of them..

And about what Graves said, all this could have been easily avoided if he had simply said the Windies will be an inexperienced side, than a mediocre side. And from what I read of the context, I am guessing that is basically what he meant to say but did not use the PC term for it.

@Steve

Did you not watch Australia lose 4-0 in India against the same players and then 2-0 against a half injured half banned Pakistan team in the UAE?

Since then Smith and Warner have become better and the quicks have come along nicely but that's really about it. No way is it a toss up. India clear favourites.

Ha, yeah, Australia's been overwhelmingly pathetic in the Subcontinent (and UAE) for some time now.

He made so much out of Cook's comment on Graves when Cook explicitly said that it wasn't the reason they lost

My understanding is that Ali played as the specialist spinner whenever they didn't have Ajmal?

Its a poor article and that is from someone who doesn't really like Cook. He thinks he is untouchable? Really? The same guy who was dropped as captain for the ODI World Cup and who looked last Summer he had all the pressures of the world on him when batting? I very much doubt that.

The Cook dismissive line about Yorkshire was misguided, but not nasty, just a crap attempt at humour to get out of a tricky conversation.
